Aaron McKibbin beat the European Champion en route to a gold medal

GOLDEN START TO THE PARALYMPIC TABLE TENNIS YEAR

In the first major (Factor 40) event of the season in Italy, the BTTAD British squad won 10 medals.

Gold was the colour won by Aaron McKibbin and Ross Wilson in the very strong Class 8 team event with wins over Sweden 3-2 in the semi-final and 3-1 over Belgium in the final. Aaron starred in the semi-final beating the European Champion along the way while both won all their singles against Belgium.

Ross won a silver medal in the Class 8 singles repeating his European success and silver was also won in Class 7 singles by Will Bayley who lost to Popov of Ukraine who he beat at the Europeans as well as by Will and Paul Karabardak in the Class 7 team event –again losing to Ukraine

In addition to the gold and three silvers, six bronzes were also achieved in the following:

Class 1 Men’s Singles – Robert Davies; Team – Paul Davies and Robert Davies

Class 3 Women’s Singles – Sara Head; Team – Jane Campbell and Sara Head

Class 4 Women’s Singles – Sue Gilroy; Team – Sue Gilroy with Anna Kanova (Slovakia)
