Day Six – Walker and Weerasinghe Beat Higher Ranked Opposition

Day six of the European Youth Championships saw the start of the singles and mixed doubles. Helshan Weerasinghe played his best game of the event beating Jim Cloos ranked number 32 cadet in a close five set match. Sam Walker also beat higher ranked opposition when he faced Marc Rode of Germany ranked at 38 in the junior boys winning 4 – 1.

In the Cadet Girls Singles Damina Uzel of Turkey was too strong for Emma Torkington but Megan Knowles went through with a 6 game win over Karoline Mischek of Austria.

In the Cadet Boys Singles, in addition to Helshan’s good win, Jared Patel progressed against Soterios Andreou of Cyprus and Igor Morais had no problem disposing of Dennis Terna of Moldavia in 4 straight games.

The Cadet Mixed Doubles first round was today as well and only Jared Patel and Emma Torkington departed losing to Aliksandr Khanin and Veranika Baravikova of Belarus. Igon Morais and Tin-Tin Ho won in 3 straight games against a pair from Azerbaijan. Helshan Weerasinghe and Megan Knowles came through a tight battle with Hristos Hristonov and Sophia Koni of Cyprus winning 13-11 in the fifth game.

In the Junior Boys Singles the surprise of the day was a win by Eskild Jorgenson of Norway in a tight, until the final game, seven game battle with Gavin Evans in the qualifying round.

In the first round Lewis Grey lost to Florent Lambert of Belgium but Sean  Cullen joined Sam Walker and seeded Liam Pitchford in the second round with a good win over Nuno Gonzaga or Portugal.

No success in the Junior Girls Singles, all 4 of the English girls fell  to Teresa Kraft of Germany(Karina), Szilvia Fulop of Hungary(Yolanda), Yana Drykina of Belarus(Tressa) and Daniela Moskovits of Sweden(Chloe)

The Junior Mixed Doubles was a much better story  Sam Walker and Karina Le Fevre beat  Ervin Zelezen and Alex Galic of Slovenia, Lewis Grey and Yolanda King went through against Florent Lambiet and Alison Georgis of Belgium and both Tressa Armitage partnering Laurens Tromer of Holland and Sean Cullen partnering Tessy Gonderinga of Luxembourg progressed.
