England women finished their World Team Championships campaign with a 3-2 defeat by Cuba, to end in the 40th-44th position bracket.

Tin-Tin Ho won her two matches, overcoming world No 258 Idalys Lovet and No 222 Lisi Castillo, but two defeats by the same opponents for Maria Tsaptsinos and one for Denise Payet – 12-10 in the decider of a close match against 534-ranked Shelly Machado Fernandez – saw England defeated.

Having won their first three group matches against Dominican Republic, Switerland and Chile, England lost their final two group matches and then today’s play-off. Ho ended with seven victories from her 10 matches, Tsaptsinos with two from eight and Payet with three from six.

England’s men have their quarter-final against Sweden today at 5pm UK time, with the winner guaranteed bronze.
