England’s Junior Boys and Cadet Girls both finished on a high at the European Youth Championships with victories in their final matches – the boys ending in ninth place.

Having beaten Czech Republic and then avenged a group-stage defeat by Poland in the earlier play-off matches, the boys faced Slovakia for ninth and 10th positions today.

With Tom Jarvis rested, Josh Bennett joined Matt Leete and Luke Savill in the line-up and the Eastbourne player played a pivotal role, winning both his matches, including the deciding fifth match against Jakub Zelinka in the fifth game.

The Cadet Girls’ line-up of Charlotte Bardsley and Megan Gidney won 3-0 against Slovenia to end in 23rd place.

The individual competitions get under way in Portugal on Wednesday.
