East Sussex Schools Table Tennis Competition 2013

100 players compete to play at national schools!

Amelia Long and Kyah Ovenden were triumphant in the under 13 girls

St Leonards Academy hosted the annual East Sussex schools individuals competition, with over 100 players competing over 2 evenings. The players came from all over East Sussex, including Brighton. All were competing to win their age group and a coveted place at the national school finals to be held on April 20th in Doncaster.

Winner Joelle Bennett with runner-up Joanne Perkins

In the Under 11 boys event it was players from the Lewes area who shone. The title was taken comfortably by Roddy McGillivray from Western Road Primary, beating Louis Zanden from Wallands School in the final.  The under 11 girls was a round robin event, with Joelle Bennett aged 10, from Willingdon Primary School taking the trophy, beating Joanne Perkins from West St Leonards Primary School.

Joshua Bennett and William Goodstone

The Under 13 events were well represented in both boys and girls with Josh Bennett from Willingdon Community School taking the top spot and William Goodstone from Cavendish the runner-up. Older brother Jack Bennett also took the under 16 title beating Ryan Gregory from Ratton, so 3 members of the Bennett family will be going to the national finals!

The Under 13 girls was won by the host school’s own player Amelia Long, who won comfortably in the final against Kyah Ovenden from Willingdon Community School. Finally in the girls events Yuki Watt from St Bedes proved too strong for Brighton Aldridge Community Academy player Emma Sheen, who put up a good fight, but was up against the holder of last year’s national under 16 title. It was really encouraging to see 22 girls playing across the age groups!

Bradley Heselden and Darryl Elliott

Finally the Under 19 Boys was won by Bradley Heselden from Bexhill College, who beat team mate Darryl Elliott in a round robin event. Trophies were presented by East Sussex Schools Table Tennis Chairman Chris Woods.
