Paul Drinkhall found world No 181 Lam Siu Hang a tough nut to crack before securing a 4-2 win to move into the last 16 of the Indian Open.

He opponent, from Hong Kong, made a fast start, blitzing the opening set 11-0, before England’s No 1 fought back to take the next three, including a vital third 14-12.

Four successive points from 7-7 allowed Lam to take the fifth, but Drinkhall came back to clinch the sixth and move into the next round.

Drinkhall, seeded sixth, will next face 10th seed Ruwen Filus of Germany at 9.45am UK time on Friday.

However, Sam Walker was knocked out, finding eighth seed Robert Gardos of Austria too strong as his opponent won in four straight.

Walker & Drinkhall were beaten in four sets in the first round of the doubles by French pair Tristan Flore & Quentin Robinot.
