Tin-Tin Ho and Paul Drinkhall both lost in four straight at the German Open as they were unable to join Liam Pitchford in the main draw.

Ho was up against French national champion Yuan Jia Nan, who never allowed her opponent to get a foothold in the match, the closest game being the first, which was 11-7 in the Frenchwoman’s favour.

Ho had particular problems on her own serve, losing 23 and winning just eight points when she had the serve.

Drinkhall faced world No 32 Tomislav Pucar of Croatia and saw his opponent win nine consecutive points in the first game, which he took 11-2. The subsequent three games were much closer, but Drinkhall was unable to land enough blows to force his way back into the game.

It means only Liam Pitchford, the 16th seed, will represent English interest in the main draw. He will face Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, who he beat at the recent European Team Championships, at 7pm UK time. The match will be streamed live on ITTV (table 3).

Pitchford & Drinkhall went out of the men’s doubles in the preliminary round to the Polish-Belgian combination of Jakub Dyjas & Cedric Nuytinck.

The English pair had a chance to win the first game before going down 12-10, but quickly recovered from the setback to level 11-3. However, their opponents reasserted control and won the next two games to move into the last 16.
