The first day’s singles have finished in Budapest with the top English players all starting serenely with confident victories.

The top two rated men; Paul Drinkhall and Andrew Baggaley, as well as the top two rated women; Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley all won their opening matches of the 2012 campaign with only two games dropped between them.

There were also good starts for Daniel Reed, Chris Doran and Na Liu who, like the others, will play a deciding game tomorrow for a place in the first round proper.

Meanwhile, Olympic list hopeful Naomi Owen and England’s David McBeath both won once which means they rely on other results.

It was a bad day for Darius Knight though as he lost his opening match to Dorde Borcic 4-2 which left his Hungarian Open hopes in trouble ahead of a vital match against Erik Illas tomorrow.

This evening the boys and girls under-21s begin with David McBeath in action again.
