TOLLGATE TEAMS TOP TABLES

Tollgate’s established ‘A’ team in Division One & their new ‘D’ team in Division Four have made an early statement of intent in the Colchester & District Table Tennis League season. Last season’s runners-up opened up a lead in Division One, beating their ‘B’ team 8-2. Former Ipswich champion Charlie Fulcher completed a fine treble, joined by current Clacton Men’s Champion Greg Green, who beat former three times champion Martin Hogg for the second season running in five tight sets. The surprise of the night was Sue Welham’s defeat of Nigel Hodder, which also went the full distance. This sets up an interesting top of the table clash for the Holmwood House School based team against new boys Pegasus A this week who are flying high, unbeaten in second spot.

Last week they accounted for St James A 7-3 with the experienced Ian Whiteside making it six wins out of six, this week without dropping a set. Amongst his victims was Clacton Junior Champion James Denyer who won two for the Clacton team. In the all Gt Horkesley clash the ‘B’ team came out on top 7-3 against their ‘C’ team. Lloyd Bennett-Smith and Wudong Liu starred for the newly promoted side, both undefeated. St James fared better when defeating H20 Rowhedge B 7-3, Gill Lock completing an excellent maximum. Amongst her conquests were David Moss and John Andrews and with her son James Denyer winning two, St James are clearly a force to be reckoned with.

Division Two promises to be the closest division of all with only one team with a 100 per cent record after two weeks. Lawford A are top with an emphatic 10-0 win over H20 Rowhedge F with Peter Armes, Luke Swain and Nick Galley all undefeated. Tollesbury A are second following an 8-2 success over Tollgate for whom Lorrie Austin won one on his debut. Roger Clarke and Paul Freeman won three apiece; Freeman completing a narrow 13-11 fifth end win over Jane Li, while Glen Laing was in top form again for Pegasus B. He completed his second maximum in a 5-5 draw with Clairmont, in the process inflicting a rare defeat on Paul Tracey.

St Peters are joint third with Pegasus B as they also fought out a 5-5 draw. Alan Burgess was unbeaten, ending Roger Warren’s 100 per cent record in three straight sets as Warren won twice.

St James C head Division Three as their strong squad had little trouble at Pegasus E, winning 8-2, thanks mainly to Terry May who won three. The previous week they fielded three different players this time going the whole-hog in a 10-0 defeat of Pegasus E. Second placed Gt Horkesley D defeated their ‘E’ team by the same score line, Steve Holland, Phil Wolski and Pete Witton all undefeated. Luke Swain is unbeaten before he ventures back to University and he lead Lawford B to a 9-1 win over H20 Rowhedge H. Peter Freeborough joined him unbeaten.

Back to Tollgate and their ‘D’ team have made a strong start in Division Four with two fine wins. Both were by the same 7-3 score with Allan Smith and Richard Baxter making an unbeaten start to the season, this week against Lawford D. Pegasus F got the better of their ‘G’ team 7-3 with Andrew Cousins and Dave Haslam untroubled. Lawford C beat H20 Rowhedge I 6-4 courtesy of a Steve Marr treble.
