GILBERD BEAT CRGS TO GO ABOVE THEM IN TABLES

The teachers from the Gilberd School overcame the CRGS pupils 8-2 to move up to third in Division Four of the Colchester and District Table Tennis League. Roger Springett won his third consecutive player of the match award, winning his three as did Evaldas Ablonskis as the CRGS team, without Jasper Chan lost their second match on the bounce to see their title challenge waiver. The Gilberd are now third, ten points behind leaders Dedham B with a game in hand. Dedham did their promotion aspirations the power of good with an 8-2 win over Lawford D as Marlene Smith won her three. It was a good week for the Gilberd School as their ‘B’ team crushed Gt Horkesley 10-0 with Dan Rhodes, Keir Brown and David Austin all unbeaten.

In Division One Tollgate A move up to second following their tenth straight win, beating Gt Horkesley B 9-1. Wudong Liu caused the only upset beating Colin Stallwood as Andy Warner and Greg Green completed maximums. Walton A went one better beating their ‘B’ team 10-0, Jason Gale getting the better of his father Mark in four sets.

In Division Three the University of Essex beat H20 Rowhedge G 6-4 with Oliver Pink and Hingent Lam both untroubled.

With the league programme now in the Christmas break attention has turned to the team Handicap competition. Group Six saw the two closest matches, both resulting in 5-4 wins for the away teams. H20 Rowhedge E beat St James D with John Owen winning his two singles as did Alistair Woodcock and Kevin Turner for Pegasus D against Lawford A. The best match of the round came as Pegasus G overcame H20 Rowhedge C in the very last game of the night to clinch a 5-4 win. Rob Welham and Helen Woolnough won the doubles to seal it with Gary Cattermole the only player to win both his singles as the Division Four team toppled the team from Division One!  There was some respite for the ladies of Gt Horkesley C who beat H20 Rowhedge H 5-4. Lawford B also had a good, close win over Pegasus A, 5-4 thanks mainly to Andrea Alleyne who was unbeaten in all four of her games. All handicap results are featured on the website.
