Colchester Royal Grammar School head Division Four of the Colchester & District Table Tennis League with a one hundred per cent record! Jasper Chan heads the averages with nine wins from nine, supported by Ryan Cheung with eight. They have accounted for H20 Rowhedge I, Dedham B and rival school the Gilberd B by scores of 9-1, 7-3 & 6-4. Dan Rhodes provided stiff resistance on debut for the Highwoods based school, bagging a pair of wins on debut. Karl Baldwin was another making his first appearance in Colchester and he led Tollgate D to a 6-4 win against H20 Rowhedge I despite being without their other two unbeaten players. Despite this they slip to joint second along with Lawford B, John Colvin leading them to a 7-3 success with three wins, also against The Gilberd.

Dedham B are one of three teams on twenty points as they cruised past a two player Gt Horkesley F 9-1. They were indebted to their vastly experienced ladies, Marjorie Culham and Marlene Smith, who both completed maximums. St James have a game in hand and made it two wins from two comfortably accounting for the Gilberd A team 8-2. Tricia Salter and Colin Beaumont their star players, undefeated. The school team fared better with an 8-2 win of their own over Pegasus G. There was a welcome back for Roger Springett as he completed three fine wins, Dan Rhodes picking up another brace. Pegasus F beat Lawford D 7-3 with player of the match Peter Sear winning Lawford’s three points.

The St James club have made an instant impact on the Colchester league with only three defeats in ten and their presence is felt none more so than in Division Three. They top the table by two points and this week toppled Gt Horkesley G 8-2 with another two wily old foxes; Ferdy Rodriguez and Tony Oswick proving two strong for the all ladies team. Steve Holland and Pete Witton were another senior pair to shine, both unbeaten in an 8-2 Gt Horkesley D win over a two player Dedham A.

Doug Green was in inspired form for Pegasus D against their ‘E’ team winning all three in a narrow 6-4 success. Pegasus C had two 7-3 results; the Dedham A match in their favour, the Lawford B one against them. Peter Freeborough and Nigel Parmenter were the ‘players of the match’. Josh Sidki made an impressive start for H20 Rowhedge G with three wins, as did Jermaine Fearon in a 9-1 hammering of Pegasus D.

Tollesbury A have shot out of the blocks in Division Two and thanks to Paul Freeman and Roger Clarke they beat H20 Rowhedge F 8-2. Lawford A are joint top and despite an unbeaten solo effort from Alan Burgess H20 Rowhedge D went down 7-3, the highlight Burgess’s five set win over the previously undefeated Luke Swain. Walton C are the only team to have won all their games and John Rice ensured there were no slip ups in an 8-2 win at St Peters. Clairmont made it three draws out of three in a 5-5 result at H20 Rowhedge E with John Owen beating Paul Tracey in four ends to secure his maximum. Martin Edwards won three for the same team in an 8-2 win at St James B. Glen Laing is unstoppable for Pegasus B, beating Martyn Green in three ends as his team fought out a 5-5 draw with Tollgate C.

Toby Turner caused the biggest upset of the week in Division One downing Greg Green in five ends, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8 & 11-9. Green also had to fight back from two sets down against Steve Noble as his Tollgate A team won 9-1 to stay top. Sixteen-year-old Jason Iong from Hong Kong won his three matches and looks a promising signing for Tollgate.

H20 Rowhedge A moved up to second with a 10-0 slaughter of Walton B but their ‘B’ team could only manage a 5-5 draw with Walton A, Kevin Gowlett winning all three on his first appearance. St James A won 6-4 despite Gary Young’s sterling efforts, unbeaten for Gt Horkesley C. H20 Rowhedge C recorded their first win, 6-4 at home to Tollgate B for whom Colin Stallwood won three. Previously they went down 7-3 at Walton B, their first win, thanks mainly to Gavin Price’s treble.
