BOWERS BACK FOR BOBCATS IN FINE STYLE

John Bowers made an immediate impact this week at the start of the 2011/12 season of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League

After a season’s absence, Bowers, playing in the colours of Nomads Bobcats in Division Three, chalked up an impressive hat-trick against one of the fancied promotion teams; Brotherhood G.

Alas for Bowers, his efforts came to nought, Brotherhood taking the match 6-4, Fred Gallone winning twice as did James Smith-Daye who beat both Barry Brandon and Harry Barlow 11-7 in the fifth.

Elliott Attrill was undefeated as Brotherhood K overcame Nomads Leopards 6-4. Attrill’s maximum included a narrow 11-8 game in the deciding win over Tony Rayner.

Nomads Cougars began with a promising 6-4 victory against Brotherhood L, Paul Hume unbeaten and Sam Hume winning twice, whilst there was a hat-trick apiece for Tom Burton and Kelvin Olano of Brotherhood J, 7-3 winners over Windsor Penguins.

Windsor Swallows were unfortunate to find Adam Wilkin in the Brotherhood H side but two wins each for Windsor’s Malcolm Caley and Sue Watson ensured the match ended as a draw.

Sadly, Windsor Kites began this season where they left off last, suffering a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Nomads Pumas, the closest match seeing John Houghton beat Chris Simson 11-6 in the fifth.

In Division One Windsor Condors eased to a 9-1 victory over Windsor Kestrels, Frank Burbidge getting the Kestrels’ consolation point with a good win over Jim Pallett. Bob Sawyer also taking the same player close but just losing out 11-8, 11-7, 4-11, 9-11, 9-11.

Five of the matches went to a decider as Windsor Roosters drew with Nomads Panthers, Gary Cattermole unbeaten for Windsor with Colin Webber and Joe Andrews taking two each for Nomads.

No-one stayed undefeated in the drawn match between Walton B and Windsor Eagles, Graham Buxton and Martin Hogg for Walton, and Fred Button and Sue Welham for Windsor, all winning twice, the closest match seeing Buxton beat Welham 12-10 in the fifth.

Brotherhood B had a hard fight before beating Walton C 7-3, Martin Edwards taking a maximum, John Owen and Stewart Murray winning two each.

In Division Two Walton D got off the blocks quickly with a 10-0 victory over Windsor Harriers although Terry May nearly spoiled the party, going down 11-8 in the decider to John Rice and 12-10 in the decider to George Kalli.

Both relegated teams got off to a winning start, a weakened Windsor Hawks beating Brotherhood F 8-2, and Lawford defeating Nomads Lynx 9-1, Peter Sear and Richard Spence taking trebles in the latter match.

Gary Stallwood was unbeaten as Windsor Owls shared the spoils with Brotherhood C, Tricia Salter enjoying an unexpected win over Chris Smith whilst Adam Jackson only narrowly failed to get on the score-sheet, losing 11-2, 13-11, 8-11, 11-13, 9-11 to Smith.

John Weller’s hat-trick for Nomads Lions, which included the scalp of Dave Martin, helped his side to a comfortable 8-2 victory over newly-promoted Windsor Magpies, John Fenton and new-signing John Hatley contributing a couple each.

Finally, three for Paul Alden saw Brotherhood D home 7-3 against Windsor Ravens whose points came from two singles wins from Brian Thiel and a doubles victory, 11-9 in the fifth, from Isabel Barton and John Long over Alden and Russell Hillier.
