LEE TAKES CONTROL IN BROTHERHOOD BATTLE

Lee Allen began his table tennis career in the Clacton and District League in fine style with an unbeaten three in Brotherhood G’s 6-4 success over club-mates Brotherhood L in Division Three. But it was not all plain sailing as Allen’s 14-12, 11-13, 10-12, 11-4, 11-7 victory against young Morgan Harvey suggests.

There were two each for both Harvey and Jonathan Found for the ‘L’ team, Found’s couple including a nail-biting 10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10 win over Alan Fryer.

Pre-season favourites Brotherhood E were comfortable 10-0 winners over Windsor Kites and, although Lucy Burton defeated both Norman Jacobs and Roger McNaughton, Nomads Leopards ran out 8-2 winners against Windsor Ospreys.

It was also 8-2 for Windsor Swallows against Nomads Wildcats, Malcolm Caley undefeated for the Swallows, Harry Barlow winning twice for the Wildcats with success against Sheila Howe and Iris Howlett.

Brotherhood H defeated Windsor Penguins 9-1, the consolation point for the Penguins an unexpected doubles win for Jackie Bunce and Mike Monschau over Gerald Batt and David Wilkin.

Walton E started with a 7-3 defeat at the hands of Nomads Pumas, their points coming from Paul Woolnough, signed to cover for Division One absences but forced to play because of a late withdrawal from the Walton team.

In Division One the Cougars will feel pleased with their draw with Walton C, Sam Hume and Colin Beaumont each winning twice. Beaumont was involved in the closest match of the evening, an 11-7 in the fifth win over Paul Meikle.

It was also all-square between Walton D and Windsor Hawks, although four of the Hawks’ points came from matches that ended close in five. Walton’s Kevin Gowlett was undefeated while there were two each for Windsor’s Felipe Rodriguez and Andy Vincent.

Gary Cattermole was Windsor Eagles’ star player in their 8-2 success against Nomads Lions for whom John Fenton also caught the eye with wins against Fred Button and Phil Smith, the latter a tight 13-11, 2-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-6 victory.

Walton B newcomer Derek Willis was unbeaten and John Rankin took an excellent couple as Walton B edged past Brotherhood B 6-4, Martin Edwards taking two for the losers.

Brotherhood A, beset by player-availability problems, were forced to field two reserves against Walton A and so there was little surprise in the 10-0 result in favour of Walton.

The closest match in Division Two saw Lawford and Windsor Owls share the spoils. Frank Burbidge won three and Tricia Salter two for the Owls, whilst Paul Hewitt took two for Lawford and shared a crucial doubles win with Ian Sherwood against Burbidge and Salter.

Brotherhood J had a tough baptism against pre-season favourites Windsor Kestrels but, with their opponents forced to field a reserve, limited the damage to a 7-3 defeat. Dave Martin and Graham Bunce were unbeaten for the Kestrels.

The other promoted side, Brotherhood I, were on the wrong end of a 10-0 score-line against Brotherhood F, John Wrigley’s match against Barry Allen the only one extended to a fifth set.

Doug Green took a hat-trick, and Adam Cuthbert and new-signing John Hockley two each, in Nomads Ocelots’ 8-2 win against Windsor Harriers. Ferdy Rodriguez gained the two points for the losers and narrowly lost 10-12, 6-11, 12-10, 12-10, 8-11 to Green.

Paul Hume was included in the Nomads Jaguars’ side against Windsor Harriers and took his maximum in the drawn match. Isabel Barton won two for the Harriers and shared a good doubles win with Jenny Higgins against Hume and Brian Friday.

A Hume-less Nomads Jaguars later lost 9-1 to Brotherhood C, Laurence Torr and Kevin Pryor taking hat-tricks. Harry Hawkes beat Fred Gallone to take the Nomads’ point and narrowly lost 11-7 in the fifth to Torr, the same score by which Pryor beat Friday.
