MARTIN TURNS UP TRUMPS

If Windsor Kestrels are to take the honours this season in Division Two of the Clacton and District League, they will be looking to their number one player Dave Martin to lead the way.

Martin turned up trumps this week with an unbeaten three in the Kestrels’ 7-3 victory over Windsor Owls, out-pointing Frank Burbidge in a crucial battle of the big guns, 3-2 (11-7, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8).

Graham Bunce took a couple for the Kestrels and only just lost 11-8 in the fifth to Burbidge, whilst Ray Chillingworth, deputising in the Kestrels’ side, played well to pick up a valuable point.

In their second match, the Owls bounced back with an 8-2 success against Windsor Magpies, Tricia Salter and Adam Jackson taking maximum points, and Sue Watson breaking her duck for the season.

Brotherhood F beat Brotherhood J 9-1, Mark Beckham, Elliott Attrill and Sandie Isaac all undefeated, although it was a nail-biting 11-9 in the fifth for Isaac against Tom Burton. Kelvin Olano and Gracie Edwards retrieved a consolation point for the ‘J’ team, edging the doubles 3-2 (3-11, 11-13, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9) against Attrill and Isaac.

It was tougher for the Brotherhood F team against Nomads Ocelots, having to come back from 5-2 down to salvage the draw. Every player in the match took at a point with Attrill again taking all three.

The Ocelots found Nomads Jaguars more to their liking and ran out 9-1 winners, Peter Giles and John Hockley recording hat-tricks. Andy North’s two for the Ocelots included an 11-9 in the fifth victory over Harry Hawkes, but he lost 11-8 in the fifth to Mike Vilka.

Brotherhood I suffered another whitewash defeat, this time at the hands of Windsor Ravens, but they will feel the gods were against them, losing all three matches that went the distance. Reserve Duncan Dunne lost 11-7 in the fifth to Brian Thiel and 11-9 in the fifth to John Harvey, whilst Rowan Cottee went down 12-10 in the decider to Thiel.

Playing back in Division Three Dunne was the only Brotherhood E player to stay undefeated in his side’s 8-2 win over Nomads Lynx but it might have been different, Dunne scraping home 15-13 in the fifth against Brian Friday. Friday had a good win over Rodney Betts, as did Kevin Hume against Tony Edmonds, the score in the latter match being a tight 11-9 in the decider.

Brotherhood G had to fight hard for the points against Nomads Leopards despite the 9-1 scoreline. Both Lee Allen and Alan Fryer took maximum points although it was a narrow 3-2 (11-13, 11-4, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10) for Fryer against Tony Rayner. Rayner took the Leopards’ sole point with an excellent win, 11-8 in the fifth, against Pete Bloomfield.

Windsor Swallows, fielding a guest player, beat Windsor Ospreys

6-4, but not before Lucy Burton had recorded a surprise win for the losers, defeating Malcolm Caley 3-2 (11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-6).

Brotherhood L were comfortable 10-0 winners over Windsor Kites, as were Nomads Wildcats against Walton E. Alan Charman, Andrew Crawley and Hazel Blanche were all unbeaten for the winners in the latter match.

Greg Green and Dave Binns both made their first appearance of the season for Brotherhood A in Division One and stayed undefeated in their team’s 9-1 victory over Nomads Cougars. But not before Green suffered a scare at the hands of Sam Hume, just making it 3-2 (6-11, 22-24, 11-7, 11-1, 11-7).

Windsor Condors overcame Windsor Hawks 6-4. John Pattrick was unbeaten although it was a tight 11-8 in the decider against Felipe Rodriguez and an even tighter 11-9 in the decider against Ian Fielder. Annabelle Rodriguez contributed two good points with victories over Fielder and John Barton, and narrowly losing to brother Felipe 11-4 in the fifth in the first-ever competitive League match between the two players.

Everyone picked up a point in the Brotherhood B v Nomads Lions match but John Fenton emerged as the star player, notching up a well-deserved hat-trick in the Lions’ 6-4 win. Brotherhood’s John Owen will feel unfortunate to have lost two of his matches in five, the 3-2 (9-11, 16-14, 11-9, 11-13, 11-9) defeat at the hands of John Hatley being the closest.

Finally, in the all-Walton clash, the ‘C’ team were 7-3 victors over the ‘B’ team, Derek Willis taking three, Paul Meikle two and Mark Gale one. Meikle nearly made it a maximum but was denied by Graham Buxton who won their individual encounter 14-12 in the decider.
