Cattermole unbeaten but honours remain even
Windsor Eagles were involved in a tremendous scrap with leaders Walton A in Division One of the Clacton and District League but, appropriately, the match ended with honours even.
Five of the individual encounters went the distance with Windsor’s Phil Smith involved in three of them, beating John Rice 11-6 in the decider, losing by the same score to Colin Dearman and just going down 11-9 in the fifth to Peter Burrows.
But Gary Cattermole stood firm for the Eagles to take an excellent hat-trick which included wins in five against both Dearman and Rice, and an 11-6, 11-9, 11-8 victory over Burrows.
Elsewhere, Brotherhood A and Brotherhood D each fielded a reserve player, and the match between the two reserves was the closest of the evening with Elliott Attrill beating the ‘D’ team’s Morgan Harvey 11-8 in the fifth. The ‘A’ team ran out 9-1 winners.
Windsor Condors defeated Nomads Lions 7-3, Colin Stallwood and John Pattrick undefeated, Pattrick’s 11-6 in the fifth victory over John Weller the only match that went the distance.
Walton C’s Derek Willis took his maximum against Nomads Panthers, defeating Peter Cranmer 11-9 in the decider and Gill Locke 12-10 in the decider. The Panthers edged the match 6-4.
It was also 6-4 for Windsor Hawks against Nomads Cougars, with three for Andy Vincent, two for John Barton and one for Ian Fielder. Sam Hume took a couple for the Cougars and shared a tight 11-8, 4-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9 doubles success with Colin Beaumont against Barton and Fielder.
In Division Two Gary Stallwood and John Harvey took hat-tricks in Windsor Ravens’ 9-1 victory over Nomads Jaguars, Harry Hawkes getting the losers’ point with a win over John Long and taking Harvey close before going down 11-7, 11-13, 11-13, 11-8, 9-11.
Bob Sawyer was another undefeated Windsor player as the Kestrels won 6-4 against Nomads Ocelots, Dave Martin contributing two and Alan Rutledge one. Daryl Lott won twice for the Ocelots.
Lawford defeated Windsor Harriers 7-3, Paul Hewitt unbeaten. Windsor’s Isabel Barton inflicted a first defeat of the season on Richard Spence, 11-7 in the fifth, narrowly lost 14-12 in the decider to Ian Sherwood and shared a doubles success with Ferdy Rodriguez over Sherwood and Spence.
The Windsor Owls v Nomads Tigers encounter ended all-square, Frank Burbidge winning three for the Owls and Tricia Salter two. Darren Bunce won twice for the Tigers and, with Eric Lemke, took a crucial doubles win to earn the draw.
Brotherhood I’s unhappy start to their Division Two adventure continued, going down 10-0 to Brotherhood C. James Smith-Daye took Kevin Pryor close in five, as did John Wrigley against Fred Gallone.
In Division Three Brotherhood E proved too much for a gallant Brotherhood L, Morgan Harvey’s success against Gary Bayliss the losers’ consolation point.
A Graham Parkes maximum was the highlight in Brotherhood H’s hard-fought 6-4 win against Brotherhood G. But the result could have been different, Gerald Batt’s couple for the winners including a 14-12 in the decider victory over Pete Bloomfield whilst the ‘H’ team doubles pair, Batt and David Wilkin, scraped through the doubles 11-9 in the decider against Bloomfield and Alan Fryer. Fryer won two singles for the ‘G’ team.
Pete Miller stayed unbeaten as Nomads Lynx and Windsor Swallows enjoyed a ding-dong match before the Lynx ran out 8-2 winners. But the scoreline belied a much closer match, Brian Friday defeating Sheila Howe 12-10 in the fifth, whilst Kevin Hume beat Iris Howlett 11-9 in the fifth and Malcolm Caley 12-10 in the fifth. Sheila denied Hume his maximum, beating him 12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 15-13.
Windsor Kites have got the taste of victory and they recorded a second League win in successive weeks, this time against the newcomers of Walton E. Mick Simson and Rachel Simson broke their ducks for the season whilst Lynette Sparks had the satisfaction of recording two wins for the losers. Walton’s Toni Heyhow-Khan nearly recorded a debut victory, just losing 11-9 in the decider to Rachel Simson, but Sparks and Heyhow-Khan had the satisfaction of taking the doubles.
Nomads Pumas showed excellent sportsmanship as they eased past Windsor Ospreys 10-0 whilst it was 9-1 for Windsor Penguins against Nomads Wildcats. The closest match saw Jackie Bunce beat Hazel Blanche 11-7 in the decider with Harry Barlow defeating Bunce for the Wildcats’ sole point.
