BROTHERHOOD E BREAK THE BARRIER
Runaway Division Three leaders Brotherhood E are the first team in the Clacton and District League to chalk up a century of points.
This week they broke through the hundred-point barrier by defeating Windsor Penguins 8-2.
Tony Edmonds was their only unbeaten player on the night but he had to call on all his experience before getting the better of Ray Chillingworth 9-11, 5-11, 11-5, 13-11, 12-10. Duncan Dunne and Gary Bayliss each won two for the ‘E’ team.
The Brotherhood Club is monopolising the top of the Division with their ‘H’ and ‘G’ teams emerging as the main challengers for the second promotion spot.
Brotherhood H completed their first half-season programme with two wins, 8-2 over Nomads Pumas and 9-1 against Windsor Ospreys.
Graham Parkes and Gerald Batt were unbeaten in the match with the Pumas although Batt struggled before beating John Houghton 16-14 in the fifth. Lionel Goddard and Andrew Cousins took a point each for the losers.
Batt and David Wilkin were the ‘H’ team’s hat-trick men against the lowly Windsor Ospreys, Lucy Burton’s victory over Brian Baines the Windsor side’s sole success.
Brotherhood G were 8-2 winners over bottom-team Walton E, Lee Allen remaining unbeaten. Chris Harris made an impressive debut for Walton, defeating both Mark Trayhorn and Alan Fryer, and only just going down 12-10 in the fifth to Allen.
Windsor Swallows fielded a guest but still beat Windsor Kites 6-4. Sheila Howe and Iris Howlett were undefeated in singles but went down 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8 in the doubles to Carl Hubbard and Mick Simson.
In Division One second-placed Brotherhood A were 8-2 winners over Walton B, with Greg Green taking a treble. For Walton, Gavin Price had a win over Alan Burgess, John Rankin defeated Jermain Fearon 11-5 in the decider but Paul Newbould narrowly failed to get on the score-sheet, going down 16-14 in the fifth to Fearon.
Third-placed Windsor Condors beat Brotherhood B 9-1, Jim Pallett’s defeat at the hands of Martin Edwards in the final match of the evening the only blot on their copybook.
Walton A were forced to field a guest against Windsor Hawks but played well enough to secure a share of the spoils. John Rice’s maximum for Walton included an 11-9 in the fifth win over Felipe Rodriguez. Windsor’s Andy Vincent recorded a vital 11-8 in the decider victory over Colin Dearman.
Walton D’s Paul Woolnough defeated John Fenton of Nomads Lions but the Lions took the remaining points, John Hatley and John Weller unbeaten in the 9-1 win. Two of Weller’s matches went the distance, defeating John Marshall 11-7 in the fifth and Jenny Binns by an even closer 11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 12-10.
Russell Hillier again proved Brotherhood D’s best player in their match against Walton C and, although he came close against Mark Gale just losing 11-9 in the fifth, the Walton side were 10-0 victors.
Windsor Magpies avoided defeat in Division Two for the first time this season when they drew with Brotherhood J. David Sweetland’s two points for the Magpies included an 11-13, 14-12, 13-15, 11-4, 11-8 win over Gracie Edwards and he just failed to convert his pair to a hat-trick, losing 12-10 in the decider to Kelvin Olano.
Dan Wright also won two for the Magpies and, with Sweetland, recorded the Magpies’ first doubles win of the season. Olano and Tom Wilkin won two each for Brotherhood.
No-one stayed unbeaten but every player picked up a point as Windsor Owls edged past Brotherhood I 6-4. Tricia Salter and Adam Jackson won a pair apiece for the Owls whist Sue Watson had a good win over Rowan Cottee. But Cottee produced the surprise result of the evening, defeating the much-improved Jackson 11-9, 11-9, 11-9. Reserve Lee Allen won a couple for Brotherhood.
* Team Secretaries are asked to get all outstanding League and Cup result cards to the Press and Records Secretary by 21st December at the latest.
* In Division Two of the Veterans Section of the Essex Inter-League, the Clacton team had two 6-3 wins.
Colin Webber, Gill Locke and Phil Smith were victorious against Burnham B, Locke taking two singles and Webber one, with the town side crucially winning all three doubles.
And the trio of Webber, Smith and John Hatley then defeated West Essex, Webber and Smith unbeaten in their two singles. Smith combined with Webber and Hatley to take his two doubles.
