CONDORS CONQUER WALTON A

There was a top-of-the-table clash this week in Division One of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League and it was Windsor Condors who emerged victorious, defeating Walton A 7-3 and closing to within five points of their title-rivals.

Gary Young was in masterful form to stay unbeaten for the Condors, Colin Stallwood took a couple whilst John Pattrick, despite losing his hundred per cent record to Kevin Gowlett and Peter Burrows, had a valuable 11-8 in the fifth win over Kevin James.

It was an unusually blank evening for James who failed to record a point in a match for the first time since March 2008.

Walton A still stay top but Windsor Roosters, 10-0 winners over Nomads Jaguars, join them on fifty-three points, whilst champions Brotherhood A are beginning to threaten, this week defeating Walton C 9-1, Greg Green and John Andrews taking trebles.

Nomads Panthers beat Brotherhood B 8-2, Stewart Murray and John Owen taking the losers’ points with victories over Colin Webber and Gill Locke respectively, whilst Walton B beat Windsor Falcons 9-1, Gavin Price and Paul Newbould each winning three.

In Division Two leaders Walton D had to battle hard before overcoming Lawford 8-2, Colin Dearman remaining undefeated but Paul Woolnough losing his season’s unbeaten tag to Richard Spence, as did George Kalli to Peter Freeborough.

The three teams challenging for the second promotion place – Brotherhood C, Nomads Lions and Windsor Hawks – all won 7-3.

Brotherhood C defeated Windsor Ravens, Laurence Torr’s maximum including an 11-3, 10-12, 11-7, 7-11, 17-15 in the fifth cliff-hanger against John Long, whilst Brotherhood’s Tom Wilkin played well to beat Windsor’s Malcolm Caley in the battle of the reserves.

Nomads Lions enjoyed a good scrap with Brotherhood D before coming out on top, John Weller beating Shaun Beckham 15-13 in the fifth to notch up his hat-trick, Brotherhood’s Paul Alden denying John Fenton a maximum with a 12-10 in the decider victory.

And Windsor Hawks beat Nomads Lynx 7-3, Windsor reserve Sue Watson narrowly losing in five to both Barry Jones and Vic Little.

Elsewhere, Windsor Harriers beat Brotherhood E 8-2, Terry May and Ian Fielder undefeated, as were Gary Stallwood and Adam Jackson in Windsor Owls’ 7-3 win over Brotherhood F, all four of the matches that went the distance going in favour of the Owls.

In Division Three Nomads Pumas were forced to field a guest against Brotherhood G and went down 8-2, Brotherhood’s Fred Gallone inflicting a first defeat of the season on Andrew Cousins, 11-8 in the fifth.

Three for Elliott Attrill, two for Rob Bright and one for Brian Baines gave Brotherhood K a 6-4 victory against Nomads Bobcats, the closest match of the evening seeing Attrill out-point John Bowers 11-3, 5-11, 14-12, 8-11, 12-10.

Nomads Cougars are moving up the table nicely and this week they enjoyed an 8-2 victory over Brotherhood H 8-2, Mike Hillier and Paul Hume unbeaten.

Ray Chillingworth took three, and Jackie Bunce and Sue Chillingworth two each, in Windsor Penguins’ 8-2 win over Windsor Kites, Carl Hubbard recording two good wins for the Kites, his first in the League.

Finally, both Windsor Swallows and Brotherhood J fielded guest players which explains the unusual 5-4 score-line, the Swallows victorious thanks to Sue Watson and Iris Howlett’s 11-9 in the fifth doubles win against Kelvin Olano and Lucy Burton.

* The Handicapped Doubles Tournament takes place on Saturday 26th November at 10.00 am at the Coastal Academy. Entries from pairs or individuals should be sent to Tony Oswick or, by e-mail, to Pete White. The closing date is next Monday (21st November).
