Reliable Paul sees ‘D’ team home

If Brotherhood D end the season top of Division Two of the Clacton and District League, they may look back on this week’s 8-2 win over title rivals Brotherhood C as the pivotal match of their campaign.

The ever-reliable Paul Alden led the way with an excellent treble whilst Shaun Beckham and Lee Harvey gave valuable support with a couple each. Laurence Torr and Kevin Pryor won one each for the losers.

So, with a match in hand, Brotherhood D are now just a single point behind the ‘C’ team, and only eight points behind current leaders Nomads Cougars who’ve played two matches more.

The Cougars were 8-2 winners against Nomads Ocelots although it was so nearly a whitewash. Paul Hume and Sam Hume were unbeaten, whilst Adam Cuthbert won one and lost narrowly to Peter Giles, 11-8 in the fifth, and to Daryl Lott, 12-10 in the fifth.

Lawford are hanging on to the coat-tails of the three promotion-chasing teams, this week winning 6-4 against Nomads Tigers. Paul Hewitt and Richard Spence both took trebles.

No-one stayed unbeaten but every player picked up a point as Windsor Harriers edged past Brotherhood F 6-4. Barry Allen’s two for Brotherhood included a win over Ian Fielder whilst Windsor’s Jenny Higgins enjoyed an 11-8 in the fifth victory over David North.

Adam Jackson starred for Windsor Owls with a hat-trick in the drawn match with Brotherhood G. Elliott Attrill and Dan Malinowski won two each for Brotherhood, Malinowski involved a nail-biter with Tricia Salter, eventually winning 11-8 in the decider.

There was a shock in Division Three where Brotherhood J – without Tom Burton – lost for the first time this season, 7-3 against rivals Brotherhood I. Kelvin Olano took his three for the losers whilst the closest match of the evening saw Rowan Cottee and John Wrigley take the doubles 13-11, 5-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-9 against Olano and Lucy Burton.

The result puts ‘I’ team top, having played a game more than Brotherhood J.

Third-placed Nomads Pumas defeated Nomads Wildcats 7-3, Alan Dockerill unbeaten, and John Bowers and John Houghton taking two each. Peter Miller took two for the Wildcats and, although Harry Beezer failed to record a win, he played well to take both Bowers and Houghton to five.

It was 7-3 in another all-Nomads clash, Harry Hawkes undefeated and Denise Thompson winning two as the Bobcats beat the Lynx. Mike Vilka took a couple for the losers.

Windsor Swallows were 8-2 winners against Nomads Leopards, Angela Barratt recording a maximum, with Caroline North and Dan Wright taking two each. The closest match saw Roger Baalham beat Caroline North 6-11, 14-12, 15-17, 11-9, 12-10.

In Division One Nomads Panthers extended their lead at the top with a straightforward 10-0 win over Nomads Lions.

In the battle for the runners-up spot, Windsor Condors leap-frogged Brotherhood A following their 8-2 success. Gary Young and Colin Stallwood remained unbeaten.

But Walton A lost ground against their two rivals. Forced to field a guest player, they went down 6-4 to club-mates Walton D.

Three from Phil Smith, which included an 11-8 in the fifth win over Ian Graham, helped Windsor Eagles to an 8-2 success against Brotherhood B. Fred Button and Sue Welham took two each for the Eagles, as did Martin Edwards for Brotherhood.

Paul Meikle was unbeaten and Peter Hall won twice as Walton C defeated Windsor Hawks 7-3. Meikle had a close 12-10 in the decider win against John Barton whilst Hall defeated Annabelle Rodriguez by the same score.

Lowly Windsor Kestrels fielded two reserves against Walton B so it was no surprise they lost 9-1. Chris Petrou and Ferdy Rodriguez took the Kestrels’ sole point with a doubles’ win against Graham Buxton and John Rankin.

* In Division Two of the Super-Veterans’ Section of the Essex Inter-League, Clacton B lost 7-2 to Basildon A, Terry May and Colin Beaumont taking a singles win each.
