FIRST TREBLE FOR CAPTAIN JOHN
There were mixed emotions this week for John Plummer in Windsor Magpies’ bottom-of-the-table clash with Brotherhood I in Division Two of the Clacton and District League.
The Magpies’ long-serving skipper excelled to record a first-ever hat-trick at this level but, alas for him, his side narrowly lost the match 6-4 to remain at the foot of the table.
John Wrigley and Allen Denyer won two each for Brotherhood, both players taking Plummer close before both losing 11-8 in the decider, whilst Rowan Cottee picked up a welcome first win to guarantee Brotherhood the victory.
The encounter between the two teams immediately above them, Brotherhood J and Nomads Jaguars, ended in a convincing 8-2 victory for Brotherhood. Tom Wilkin took a fine maximum whilst Kelvin Olano and Gracie Edwards played well to take two each.
Nomads Ocelots continue to breathe in the rarefied air at the summit of the Division. This week they had a 7-3 victory over club-mates Nomads Tigers. Doug Green won three, with Daryl Lott and Andy North contributing two each.
Graham Bunce was the star of the show as Windsor Kestrels defeated Lawford 6-4. Bob Sawyer won twice for the Kestrels as did Richard Spence for Lawford. Unusually for a match between two evenly-matched teams, only three matches went to a fourth set, the remainder settled in three-straight.
Brotherhood F pulled off another good win, 7-3 against an admittedly-weakened Brotherhood C. The fast-improving Elliott Attrill won three and Mark Beckham two, whilst Lawrence Torr took a couple for the ‘C’ team. The ‘F’ team’s Barry Allen showed little paternal compassion, taking a point for the winners by defeating his son and ‘C’ team reserve, Lee Allen.
There was a similar winning 7-3 score-line for the Ravens in their all-Windsor clash with the Owls. Gary Stallwood won three, John Harvey two and Brian Thiel one. Thiel’s success was a nail-biting 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 14-16, 11-8 victory over Sue Watson.
Division Three pace-setters Brotherhood E were given a stern test by Brotherhood G and, after a titanic struggle in which five of the matches went the distance, emerged 7-3 victors. Tony Edmonds stayed unbeaten for the winners. All three of Pete Bloomfield’s matches ended 11-6 in the fifth, beating Rodney Betts and Duncan Dunne by that score but losing out to Edmonds. Lee Allen was also involved in two close matches, doing well to beat Betts 11-9 in the decider but going down 11-8 in the fifth to Edmonds.
Brotherhood H are emerging as the best-of-the rest in the group of five chasing teams, this week defeating Walton E 9-1. Toni Hayhow-Khan picked up the point for the battling Walton ladies with a victory over Brian Baines whilst Lynette Sparks took the same player close before losing 11-7 in the fifth. Lynette went even closer against David Wilkin before going down 11-8, 7-11, 13-11, 10-12, 11-9.
Every player took at least one point in Nomads Lynx’s hard-fought scrap with Windsor Penguins, a match that finally ended with honours even. An unbeaten Brian Friday inflicted a first defeat of the season on Windsor’s Ray Chillingworth. The Penguins were fortunate to win all three matches that went the distance, Chillingworth defeating Kevin Hume 11-9 in the fifth, Jackie Bunce excelling to beat the same player 11-6 in the fifth whilst Mike Monschau defeated Paul Dale, making his first appearance of the season, 13-11 in the fifth.
Brotherhood L were comfortable 9-1 winners against Windsor Ospreys, Vicki Edwards celebrating a couple of good wins although she couldn’t get the better of Lucy Burton who took the Windsor team’s point.
It was also 9-1 for Nomads Leopards against Nomads Wildcats, Tony Rayner and Roger McNaughton both unbeaten. Andrew Cawley took the Wildcats’ victory, defeating Norman Jacobs.
In Division One three from Peter Burrows saw Walton A home 6-4 against Walton C. Derek Willis and Paul Meikle won a pair apiece for the ‘C’ team.
Three for Phil Smith, two for Fred Button and one from Sue Welham were good enough for Windsor Eagles to defeat Brotherhood B 7-3. The closest match of the evening saw Button overcome John Owen 7-11, 11-13, 11-8, 16-14, 11-9. Martin Edwards took two for Brotherhood.
Felipe Rodriguez stayed unbeaten for Windsor Hawks against Nomads Lions but two each from the ‘three Johns’ – Fenton, Hatley and Weller – gave the Lions the 6-4 victory.
There were hat-tricks also for Jim Pallett and Colin Stallwood in Windsor Condors’ 8-2 win over Brotherhood D. Brotherhood’s Paul Alden chalked a first win of the season whilst Russell Hillier edged out Annabelle Rodriguez 12-10 in the decider.
