Panthers in the pink
Nomads Panthers started the second half of their season in Division One of the Clacton and District League in imperious style with a convincing 7-3 victory over title rivals Brotherhood A.
The Panthers brought out their big guns and John Monk obliged with a maximum although it was a close 11-8 in the fifth against Greg Green.
Green took a couple for Brotherhood, including a fine win over James Denyer, whilst Alan Burgess took their third point by defeating Colin Webber.
So the Panthers retain their hundred per cent record and extend their lead at the top to an impressive sixteen points.
Walton A enjoyed a narrow 6-4 success against Windsor Condors, Peter Burrows taking three and Matthew Watson two, with Watson and Colin Dearman picking up a crucial 3-2 (12-14, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8) doubles win against John Pattrick and Colin Stallwood. Windsor’s Jim Pallett had a good 11-8 in the decider win over Dearman.
Windsor Hawks were 8-2 victors against a weakened Walton B, John Rankin picking up an unexpected win for Walton against John Barton.
At the foot of the table, Nomads Jaguars lost 10-0 to Walton D although Brian Parish will feel unfortunate not to have taken a point, losing 12-10 in the decider to Paul Woolnough in the final match of the evening.
It was a similar story for Windsor Kestrels who went down 10-0 to Windsor Eagles, Phil Smith and John Hobson taking the doubles for the Eagles in the closest match, 14-12 in the fifth, against Frank Burbidge and Chris Petrou.
Three for David Hall and two each for Paul Meikle and Peter Hall saw Walton C to an 8-2 victory over Nomads Lions, John Fenton the Lions’ best player with wins over Meikle and Peter Hall. The result, temporarily at least, moves the Lions out of the relegation places.
In Division Two leaders Brotherhood D ambled to a 10-0 victory against bottom-team Brotherhood E, only three of the matches extended to a fourth set.
Lawford faced a sterner test against struggling Brotherhood G but eventually came through 8-2, Richard Spence unbeaten, and Ian Sherwood and John Colvin winning two each. The closest match was the doubles, Sherwood and Spence defeating Elliott Attrill and Jordan Blanche-Price 13-11 in the fifth. Attrill took both points for the losers.
Paul Hume’s hat-trick was the feature of Nomads Cougars’ 6-4 win over Brotherhood F, Sam Hume contributing a couple for the winners, as did David North for the losers.
Windsor Owls beat Windsor Harriers 7-3 for a second time this season, Gary Stallwood taking a predictable three, Adam Jackson taking a less expected treble that included a victory over Ian Fielder.
Windsor Magpies beat Windsor Ravens 8-2, Dave Martin and Graham Bunce unbeaten. Crucially the Magpies took the three matches that went to five, Bunce beating Isabel Barton 11-7 in the fifth and Justin Reichert 11-8 in the fifth, whilst Dave Sweetland defeated Reichert 11-9 in the fifth.
In Division Three pace-setters Brotherhood J were 9-1 winners against Windsor Penguins, Tom Burton and Kelvin Olano unbeaten. Ray Chillingworth secured the sole Windsor point and played well to take both Burton and Olano to a fifth set, whilst Jackie Bunce took Lucy Burton all the way before losing 11-7 in the decider.
The Brotherhood J side looks well-set for the title but the three chasing teams all faltered.
A Harry Hawkes’ maximum and two for Alan Fryer gave Nomads Bobcats a 6-4 victory against second-placed Brotherhood I. The critical match proved to be the doubles, Hawkes and Harry Barlow beating Rowan Cottee and Allen Denyer 3-2 (11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 5-11, 11-9). Cottee took two wins for the losers.
It was also 6-4 for Brotherhood M against Nomads Pumas, Cris Edwards unbeaten and Gracie Edwards winning twice for Brotherhood, Alan Dockerill taking two for the Pumas.
Brotherhood H defeated a weakened Windsor Swallows 8-2, Tom Wilkin enjoying a win in five against Angela Barratt.
Six of the matches between Brotherhood K and Brotherhood L went to a decider, the ‘K’ team edging it 6-4 with Pete Bloomfield unbeaten. Rob Bright’s pair for the winners included a 14-12 in the fifth win over Debra Found but he was foiled in his attempt for a treble, losing 12-10 in the fifth to Morgan Harvey. Harvey’s two wins for the ‘L’ team included an 11-9 in the decider success against Mark Trayhorn.
Finally, Nomads Lynx beat Windsor Kites 7-3, Kevin Hume and Tom Collins unbeaten for the Lynx, Carl Hubbard, Mick Simson and Rachel Simson each picking up a point for the Kites.
* The Handicapped Singles Tournament takes place on Saturday at the Coastal Academy Sports Hall. Play starts at 10.00 am and players are asked to be in attendance by 9.45 am.
* The draw for Round Three of the Knock-Out Handicap Cup sees four ties between teams from the same club, two of which are all-Division One contests – Nomads Jaguars face the Panthers, whilst Windsor Hawks have been drawn against the Condors.
