There was a second draw in three matches for Brotherhood H in Division Two of the Clacton & District League but it was John Marshall, the Nomads Tigers’ captain, who turned out top gun.
Marshall demonstrated he’s a force to be reckoned with by taking a hard-fought treble that included a 3-2 (12-10, 6-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8) win over one of the division’s top players, Grant Sharpe. Sharpe and Graham Parkes both won twice for Brotherhood, with Parkes involved in the pivotal match of the tie, defeating Daryl Lott in five (7-11, 11-9, 15-13, 11-13, 11-9).
Windsor Owls’ excellent start continued with a third consecutive win, this week 9-1 against Windsor Magpies. Frank Burbidge and Tricia Salter were unbeaten with only Dan Wright’s excellent 3-1 (12-14, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8) victory over Woo Dy preventing the whitewash.
Lawford took a 5-0 lead against Brotherhood F but had to settle for a final 6-4 scoreline. Richard Spence was in fine unbeaten form whilst Paul Hewitt contributed two and Ian Sherwood one. Brotherhood’s Lee Allen notched up a couple of good victories against Hewitt and Sherwood but Barry Allen had to wait until the last match of the evening to pick up his sole success, a close 11-9 in the decider victory against Sherwood.
Everybody picked up a point in the all-Windsor clash between the Harriers and the Buzzards but Isabel Barton was the star of the show, taking three wins in three-straight to help the Harriers to a 6-4 victory. Jenny Higgins had an up-and-down night for the Harriers, unexpectedly beating Pete Bloomfield 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-7) but going down in four to Alan Rutledge and then 11-9 in the fifth to Angela Barratt.
There were three each for Rodney Betts and Tony Edmonds as Brotherhood E got on the winning trail with a 7-3 success against Nomads Jaguars. There was a point apiece for Nomads’ Caroline North, Kevin Hume and Cris Edwards, Edwards needing all her experience before edging out Gary Bayliss 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8).
The Pumas were 9-1 winners against the Cougars in the all-Nomads clash in Division Three with Eric Lemke and Andrew Cousins undefeated. Cousins had a good scrap against Mike Hillier before coming out on top 3-2 (9-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-5, 11-8), whilst Hillier took the Cougars’ only point with a win in three-straight over Lionel Goddard.
Nomads Ocelots’ unbeaten run continued with a 7-3 victory against Brotherhood G. Mike Wellum won three, Tom Collins two and Dave Wright one, the tightest match seeing Wellum defeat Rob Bright 11-6 in the fifth. Graham Healey took a couple and Bright one for Brotherhood.
Walton D recorded a second 6-4 win of the season, this time against Nomads Leopards, Rivhu Khan unbeaten and Lynettte Sparks taking a couple. It was good to see Jason Lloyd back in table tennis action, his two points for the Leopards including an 11-9 in the fifth win against Sparks. There was also an encouraging debut success for Ethan Lloyd, who got off the mark with a point against Toni Hayhow-Khan.
Alan Charman and Mike Monschau took maximum points as Windsor Penguins powered to an 8-2 victory over Windsor Swallows. Penguins’ captain Jackie Bunce narrowly beat Vicki Edwards 11-8 in the decider but lost out to both Iris Howlett and Kayley Lamb.
None of the matches went the distance as Windsor Ospreys proved too good for Windsor Kites, winning 10-0. Woody Fitzpatrick and Debra Found took predictable hat-tricks, while there was a heartening first treble for 10-year old Maci Harvey in only her second League match.
In Division One, Nomads Panthers returned to winning ways with a convincing 9-1 success against the more-than-useful Windsor Eagles. Sam Hume’s three victories were all settled in three-straight although it was 11-7, 11-3, 19-17 against Phil Smith, while Colin Webber’s treble included an 11-5 in the decider win against Smith and an 11-9 in the decider victory against Sue Welham. John Hatley of the Panthers took a couple, including a 3-2 (2-11, 11-13, 11-9, 11-4, 11-9) victory against the luckless Smith, but he succumbed to Fred Button who took the Eagles’ sole point in the last match of the evening.
An undefeated Andy Vincent led the way for Windsor Hawks in their 7-3 success over Brotherhood C, enjoying a good five-set (11-6, 10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8) win over Alan Burgess. Burgess won two for the losers, as did Felipe Rodriguez for the winners.
It was also 7-3 for Nomads Lions against Windsor Kestrels, Adam Cuthbert’s maximum including two hard-fought five-setters against Graham Bunce and John Harvey. Bob Sawyer’s two points for Windsor were even tighter, 3-2 against both Brian Parish (16-14, 10-12, 7-11, 12-10, 11-7) and Adam Wilkin (6-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8, 11-7). Parish took two and Wilkin one for the Lions whilst Bunce got a point for the Kestrels with a surprise win over Wilkin.
Finally, there were hat-tricks for Gavin Price and Graham Buxton as Walton B defeated Brotherhood D 8-2. Lee Harvey was Brotherhood’s best player on the night, beating Colin Dearman but losing out 11-3 in the fifth to Price and 11-9 in the fifth to Buxton. Paul Alden picked up a welcome point when he edged out Dearman 3-2 (6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9).
