Joslin hat-trick helps ECC A score 8-2 win over Danbury A

ECC A did well to beat a strong Danbury A side 8-2 in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Their top player, Steve Joslin, stayed undefeated but he didn’t have it all his own way.

Joslin defeated Michael Andrews 3-2 (11-7, 9-11, 12-14, 11-8, 12-10) and Antony Greenwood by an even closer last-gasp 3-2 (17-15, 11-8, 7-11, 7-11, 18-16) margin.

The match between Danbury B and ECC B finished all square. Rik James was undefeated for ECC whilst new signing Charles Sweeney and Andrew Halling both won twice for Danbury.

Elmtree Excalibur B were impressive 8-2 winners in Division Two. Scott Dowsett won his three singles as they beat Chelmsford B. Liberal also did well to beat Danbury E by the same scoreline.

Steve Pennell and Dean Andrews both scored hat-tricks for the Liberal side. Danbury’s Dick Wyman beat Robin Armstrong over five fluctuating ends for Danbury 3-2 (11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 1-11, 11-8).

The matches between Danbury B and ECC C and Hatfield Peverel A and Danbury C both ended in draws. Danbury C’s Graham Briggs was the only player to win his three singles in these two matches. He did well to beat Gary Ward 3-1 (5-11, 14-12, 11-6, 11-9).

Elmtree Excalibur C and OCs B both notched up convincing 9-1 wins in Division Three. Elmtree Excalibur certainly impressed against Maldon C. Paul Sturton and Steve Cheesman were both undefeated as they turned in a very strong performance. Brian Riedling saved his side from getting white-washed but he had to pull out all the stops to do so. Riedling beat Rod Maclennan 3-2 (2-11, 11-8, 11-5, 15-17, 13-11).

OCs B included both Steve Northcott and Rob Burton in their side against Danbury H and therefore their 9-1 victory wasn’t such a surprise. Expect them to do well if Steve and Rob play regularly. ECC D produced a solid team effort to beat OCs C 7-3. Neil Thompson, Richard Storey and Peter Layzell all won twice.

OCs E were the week’s big winners in Division Four. Frank Hodge, Charlie Mariner and Daniel Berry were all on form as they hammered Danbury K 9-1. Norman Hayes with a five-set win over Charlie Mariner was the sole Danbury winner.

OCs D, led by an undefeated Charles Yeung, looked to be heading towards a 10-0 victory over ECC F. However, they couldn’t maintain the momentum and ECC won the last two games to add a degree of respectability to the scoreline.

Allsion Millard beat Stuart Wintle in five ends and David Gatherall defeated Adrian North 3-2 (11-9, 10-12, 8-11, 14-12, 11-9) after a fiercely fought last encounter.

Dave Carter was undefeated as Hatfield Peverel C beat Chelmsford D 7-3 whilst John Marshall won his three singles for Elmtree Excalibur D as they drew 5-5 with ECC F.

Chelmsford F were clear-cut 9-1 winners over Highwood in Division Five in a match where Richard Baxter and Colin Gooday both won their three singles.

Kevin Barber was on target for Highwood and he beat Jacqui Smith 3-2 (11-13, 11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 15-13) in a very well contested last game of the evening.

ECC, bolstered by new signing Victor Chan, beat Danbury M 6-4. Chan remained undefeated and team-mate Mark Glenister won twice. Hatfield Peverel D were also 6-4 winners. Gareth Davies won his three singles and Keith Cullen won twice. Elsewhere, Elmtree Excalibur C’s Melanie Bonnett won her three games in hers side’s 7-3 win over OCs F.

In the CLICK League OCs H beat Chelmsford H 3-2. Joel Rowden was the OCs match- winner. He beat Peter Davenport 3-0 (13-11, 11-7, 11-7) and Steven Davenport 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 1-11, 11-7).
