Davison and Gowlett lead Bocking to crushing 9-1 victory

Little went right for second-placed ECC A as they crashed 9-1 against Bocking in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

Paul Davison and Kevin Gowlett were both undefeated for the Braintree side although Davison came perilously close to losing his first singles. He only beat Peter Lau 3-2 (10-12, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8). Kevin Gowlett also had to fight back from 2-0 down to get the better of Steve Kerns 3-2 (8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10) whilst Lucy Wang missed out against Jon Hill 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 11-2, 9-11, 9-11).

Peter Hayden was on top form as OCs A drew with Maldon A. Hayden (with a very impressive record of 23 wins out of 26) played superbly to win his three singles. This included a fine 3-1 (11-3, 11-6, 9-11, 13-11) victory over Alex Abbott. A two man Maldon A drew 5-5 against ECC B. Paul Sayer was undefeated for Maldon whilst ECC’s Alistair Hill beat Hamish Innes 3-2 (8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-9, 13-11).

Danbury D scored an impressive 8-2 win over the higher-placed Hatfield Peverel A in Divison Two. Dave Richardson and Steve Whiteley were both undefeated. Richardson completed what was a very good evening’s work with a 3-2 (11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 8-11, 11-5) victory over John Webber.

Hatfield Peverel A ran out 6-4 winners against a two-player Rawreth & Hullbridge B. Hatfield Peverel’s Gary Ward was unbeaten. Elmtree Graphics B stay top although they didn’t sparkle in their 6-4 victory over Danbury E. The 2014 M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Tournament Under 21 Singles Champion Scott Dowsett won his three singles whilst Tim Cramphorn picked up two wins for the Danbury side.

In Division Three second-placed Elmtree Excalibur C suffered their fourth defeat of the season when they succumbed 6-4 to Danbury G. No single player stayed undefeated and Rod Maclennan and Paul Sturton both won twice for Elmtree whilst Ken Sheard and Chris Hancox both picked up two wins for Danbury G. Rod Maclennan defeated fellow Chelmsford League Committee member Ken Sheard 3-2 (11-3,11-8, 5-11, 3-11, 14-12).

Hatfield Peverel B shaded it 6-4 against OCs C. Neil Freeman won his three singles for Hatfield Peverel B whilst Gareth Davies beat Roy Moore 3-2 (11-9, 11-3, 4-11, 6-11, 16-14) in the closest game of the night.

OCs E with only one defeat in 16 matches are clear leaders in Division Four. Charlie Mariner (two wins), Frank Hodge (three wins) and Daniel Berry (three wins) were convincing 9-1 winners over EPHQ. The match between Danbury J and OCs E finished tied at 5-5. The ever-present Daniel Berry (with a very impressive record of 44 wins out of 48) won his three singles for the “Old Boys” team.

OCs D have climbed into second place and they beat Writtle B 8-2. Adrian North and Charles Yeung were both undefeated although Charles Yeung had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Colin Griffith 3-2 (13-11, 11-3, 16-18, 8-11, 11-8). Hatfield Peverel C led by an undefeated Ray Eldridge beat ECC F 6-4. ECC’s Mohammed Mohseni won a close encounter against Adam Carter 3-2 (11-9, 13-11, 2-11, 6-11, 11-9).

Second-placed OCs G were the week’s big winners in Division Five. Peter Windley and Tom Barker were both undefeated as they beat ECC G 9-1. Maldon D stay top, just two points ahead of OCs G and they beat Elmtree Excalibur E 7-3.

Ciaran Whelan was undefeated whilst Melanie Bonnett won twice for the Elmtree Excalibur side. Highwood ran out 6-4 winners over Danbury M, courtesy of a hat-trick from Martin Goddard. This included a decisive 3-1 (11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-2) win over Scott Perry – Danbury’s best player.

Highwood also beat OCs F 7-3. Kevin Barber, Martin Goddard and Russell Downton all won twice for Highwood although none of them were able to get the better of David Newman. OCs F also missed out 6-4 against Hatfield Peverel D, and again it was David Newman (30 wins out of 36) who dominated proceedings. He won his three singles.

Elmtree Excalibur E had Nicola Pippen to thank as they beat the higher-placed Danbury m 6-4. Nicola beat the Danbury trio of Dan Anderson, Eamon Hall and Martim Knights.

Buttsbury B did well to win the mid-table battle in the CLICK League against OCs H 4-1. Nathan Fry was unbeaten whilst Joseph Mendoza beat Joel Roweden and only missed out 2-3 (10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 11-13) against Lawrence Bartlett.
