Steve Northcott’s hat-trick leads OCs B to 6-4 victory over Writtle A

OCs B’s hard-hitting Steve Northcott produced the top performance of the week (and one of the best of the season so far) in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League as his three singles wins enabled OCs to beat Writtle A 6-4.

Northcott battled his way to a five set win over Kevin Worthington, a four ends win over Gary Ward and a 3-2 success against Paul Cuming. Another result that stood out in what was clearly a well-contested match was Paul Cuming‘s five-set victory over Martin Cole.

OCs B also turned in an impressive performance against OCs A, winning 8-2. Dave Cole led from the front with three singles wins whilst teammates Steve Northcott and Robbie Burton also showed up well.

Robbie scored a superb 3-1 victory over Terry Dowsett whilst Steve Northcott excelled against Chelmsford Junior Champion, Brandon Crouchman and ran out a 3-0 winner.

ECC A recorded their third win of the season, a much needed 7-3 victory over Maldon A. Steve Joslin, in his first appearance of the season made the difference with three singles wins. Meanwhile, Danbury A have jumped clear of relegation and they beat both Chelmsford A and Maldon A 7-3. Antony Greenwood won his six singles in these two matches although he was made to fight hard by Chelmsford’s Darren Richardson who only succumbed 10-12, 4-11, 11-9, 16-14, 8-11.

In Division Two, Writtle B edged out Excalibur C 6-4. Hector Rogers led the way with a hat-trick of wins and he sealed his side’s success in the last game of the night defeating Ian Rattray 20-18, 13-15, 13-11, 5-11, 11-6 after a marathon battle.

Chelmsford C’s fast-improving Robert Shrimpton was on good form against Liberal A and his three wins enabled his side to the share the points. He beat all three Liberal players – Steve Pennell, Robin Armstrong and Barry Pritchard in three-straight games. ECC C had James Hicks leading the way as they beat Writtle B 7-3. Hicks received excellent support from Bryn Thomas and Colin Blore who both won twice.

Danbury B continue to set the pace in Division Three and they were the week‘s big winners. Neil Want and Glen Laing were both undefeated as they beat ECC D 9-1. Danbury D were also clear-cut winners and they beat Danbury E 8-2. Peter Hance (three wins), Herbie Smith (two wins) and Norman Smith (two wins) all contributed handsomely.

Rawreth’s Paul Churn was the “Star of the Show” in his side’s 7-3 victory over OCs D. Churn had to dig deep to get the better of Nat Ravlic 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 16-14.

The match between Chelmsford D and ECC D finished all square. Gordon Fairchild and Keith Martin won twice for Chelmsford whilst Peter Layzell picked up two singles for the County Council team.

Bottom side Hatfield Peverel D scored a very welcome win in Division Four, and a very convincing 9-1 success it was as well. Gareth Davies and Keith Cullen were both undefeated as they beat Hatfield Peverel E. Gareth Davies impressed by defeating the usually impregnable Dave Carter 14-12, 11-4, 11-4. Davies also won his three singles as Hatfield Peverel D drew with EPHQ. He had to fight hard to beat Ian Hockley 4-11, 11-8, 14-12, 11-9 in his first game of the night.

EPHQ fared worse against third-placed Danbury J and they succumbed 7-3. Danbury’s Chris Hancox led the way with three wins and Adam Morrison who won twice supported him well.
