Writtle A well beaten by ECC B

It wasn’t a good week for the two leading teams in Division One of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

Writtle A were well beaten 8-2 by an improving ECC B. Rik James won his three singles whilst Simon Webber and Alistair Hill both picked up two wins. Alistair Hill completed an excellent evening’s work by the ECC B team by beating Paul Cuming 3-2 (11-13, 2-11, 13-11, 13-11, 11-8) in the last game of the night.

Maldon A met their match against Elmtree Graphics A and were held to a 5-5 draw. Gary Young scored a superb hat-trick of wins which included a 3-1 victory over Paul Sayer and a 3-2 win over Alex Abbott – Abbott’s second defeat of the season. Gary Baker played his part with wins over Paul Sayer and Hamish Innes.

OCs A have dropped back into fourth place. They beat Danbury A 6-4. Steve Northcott won twice for OCs, which included a fine 3-2 (8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 5-11,13-11) victory over Antony Greenwood. In his last singles Greenwood in turn made his mark beating David Cole 3-2 (7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 5-11, 11-3).

A well-contested match between Bocking and Elmtree Graphics B finished tied at 5-5. Bocking’s Kevin Gowlett and Paul Davison and Elmtree’s John Holland and Paul Lucas all won twice. Kevin Gowlett beat Paul Lucas 3-2 (12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 12-14,12-10) in the closest game of the night.

In Division Two second-placed Chelmsford A beat third-placed ECC C 7-3 after a fiercely fought match where six games were decided in the fifth end. Chelmsford came out on top in four of these games and the Chelmsford Captain Waseem Qureshi won his three singles. The match between Writtle B and Hatfield Peverel A finished tied at 5-5. Matthew Brown was undefeated for Writtle.

Third-placed Elmtree Excalibur C were the week’s big winners in Division Three. Ian Rattray, John Tendler and Bill Smith were all undefeated as they ran out 10-0 winners against OCs B. Fielding an entirely different side of Chris Aukett, Kevin Smart and Lin Attridge they lost 6-4 to ECC D despite the fact that Chris Aukett won his three singles. Peter Layzell and Neil Thompson both won twice for ECC D.

Rawreth look good for second place and they beat Elmtree Excalibur C 6-4. Mike Worship won his three singles to give Rarwreth the edge, whilst Lin Attridge picked up two excellent wins over Matt Rolfe and Paul Churn. Lin Attridge beat Paul Churn 3-2 (10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-13, 11-8) in the closest game of the evening.

In Division Four Hatfield Peverel D and Danbury G shared the spoils with a 5-5 draw. Dave Carter (47 wins out of 54) won his three singles for Hatfield Peverel D.

Hatfield Peverel E were 7-3 winners over OCs G in Division Five. Brian Spellar won his three singles and Ron Biggs picked up two wins. Abs Gupta did well to beat Hatfield Peverel’s Andy Whiley 3-2 (13-11, 11-9, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9) whilst Whiley hit back in his last singles to get the better of David White 3-2 (9-11, 12-10, 11- 7, 7-11, 11-9).

ECC H scored two wins in the CLICK League. Jamie Rainbow was undefeated in both matches as they saw off Chelmsford H (5-0) and Chelmsford K (3-2). Andrew Wood won three of his four singles, only missing out against Harry Isaac.
