Worthington and Radford on top form for Writtle A

First division leaders Writtle A had Kevin Worthington and Peter Radford on top form as they defeated Danbury A 7-3 in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

Worthington’s excellent hat-trick of wins included a quick-fire 3-0 victory over Michael Andrews, the surprise package of the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Closed Championships, where he played superbly to reach the Men’s Singles semi-finals.

In the second division Writtle B (Trevor Carter, Gary Ward and Matthew

Brown) beat Chelmsford B 8-2. Carter and Brown both stayed undefeated with Brown defeating James Austin 3-2 (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7) in the closest game of the night.

In the third division, Elmtree Excalibur D were held to a draw by OCs B, the first match they have failed to win this season. Scott Dowsett (26 wins out of 30) won his three singles for Elmtree and this included a fine 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8) victory over Robert Burton.

Hatfield Peverel C did well to beat the higher-placed Elmtree Excalibur C 6-4. Neil Freeman sealed the Hatfield Peverel victory by beating Ian Rattray 3-2 (6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 12-10) in the final game of the match. Freeman had earlier missed out against Chris Aukett 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10).

Division Four leaders Maldon C were the week’s big winners. Tom Elder and Dawn Baldry were both unbeaten as they defeated EPHQ 9-1. Calvin Wright notched up the consolation win for EPHQ by getting the better of Brian Riedling 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-7). OCs C were convincing 8-2 winners against Chelmsford D. Roy Moore stayed unbeaten and Mick Hayes and David Porter both picked up doubles.

Danbury H (Dave Goody, Brian Ellis and Dave Powell) beat OCs D 6-4. Brian Ellis beat Adrian North 3-2 (11-9, 7-11, 4-11, 11-6, 12-10) in the closest game of the night. The match between Hatfield Peverel D and Elmtree Excalibur E finished tied at 5-5. Dave Carter made it 36 wins out of 39 for the season by winning his three singles.

In Division Five, second-placed Danbury K beat third-placed Danbury J 6-4. Kevin Willis held the Danbury K team together. He beat Mick Robinson 3-2 (9-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5, 12-10) in his opening singles, he got the better of Roger Tiffin 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 14-12) in his second game and he defeated Norman Hayes 3-0 (11-2, 11-9, 11-4) in his last game to seal his side’s victory.

Hatfield Peverel E (Bryan Speller, Keith Cullen and Ron Biggs) ran out 9-1 winners against Highwood whilst Highwood redeemed themselves against Chelmsford E by winning 7-3. Kevin Barber won his three singles the hard way, beating Sarah Austin, Ryan Gooday and Ian Austin all in the fifth end.

Highwood were also involved in a 5-5 draw against  Elmtree Excalibur F. Craig McGrigle won his three singles for Elmtree Excalibur F  and he completed his hat-trick by fighting back from 2-0 down to get the better of Martin Goddard 3-2 (16-18, 1-11, 11-5, 11-8, 13-11).
