Cattermole excels with superb hat-trick of wins
Elmtree Excalibur B produced one of the bigger upsets of the season when they beat Bocking 7-3 in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. John Holland and Gary Cattermole were both undefeated.
The hard-hitting Cattermole produced his best display of the campaign and he beat both Kevin Gowlett 3-1 (11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8) and Paul Davison 3-1 (10-12, 11-2, 11-7, 13-11). Bocking were also held to a draw by bottom-side ECC B. Rik James dominated the evening with three singles victories.
Current leaders Writtle A played very well to beat a strong OCs A side 6-4. No single player stayed undefeated and the three Writtle players – Kevin Worthington, Paul Cuming and Peter Radford all won twice. The inform Worthington excelled by defeating David Cole 3-1 (11-13, 11-8, 11-7, 13-11).
In Division Two the leaders Danbury D defeated Writtle B 6-4. Danbury were bolstered by the inclusion of Keith Phillips but he missed out against Gary Ward over five ends 3-2 (11-5, 8-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-6).
The Division Three match between OCs B and Danbury F finished all square. 2013 M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Tournament Division Three singles Champion Robert Burton won his three singles and this included a marathon 3-2 (4-11, 11-8, 19-21, 14-12, 11-7) win over Rob Kneale in the last game of the match.
In Division Four, second-placed OCs C defeated OCs D 6-4 despite the fact that Adrian North remained undefeated for the D side. North had to call upon all his experience to get the better of another league stalwart Roy Moore 3-1 (13-11, 2-11, 14-12, 12-10).
Hatfield Peverel D were led by an unbeaten Dave Carter as they beat EPHQ 6-4. Ian Hockley showed up well for EPHQ. His two wins included an excellent 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 11-9) success against Ray Eldridge. Danbury G ran out 6-4 winners against Maldon C, despite the fact that none of their players were able to penetrate the cast-iron defence of Tom Elder.
Danbury K and Danbury J were both clear-cut winners in Division Five. Second-placed Danbury K (Kevin Willis, Trevor Palmer and Philip Crudgington) beat Chelmsford G 10-0 whilst third-placed Danbury J (Mick Robinson, Norman Hayes and Janet Pannell) defeated Chelmsford E 9-1.
