Worthington bags a top class hat-trick for Writtle A

Writtle A’s Kevin Worthington produced the outstanding performance this week in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. His excellent hat-trick of wins over Nigel Lamb, Gary Baker and Gary Young enabled Writtle to draw with Elmtree Excalibur A.

Worthington’s stiffest test came against left-handed counter-puncher Baker. He eventually emerged as a 3-2 (11-3, 6-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9) winner.

A strong OCs A side, led by an undefeated Dave Cole, beat Elmtree Graphics B 9-1. Peter Mynard recorded the ‘stand-out’ win, getting the better of Terry Dowsett 3-2 (13-11, 11-9, 7-11, 6-11, 11-8). Maldon B had an undefeated Minda Sinkus to thank as they beat Danbury A 6-4 whilst Maldon A were convincing 9-1 winners over Elmtree Excalibur B.

Chelmsford 2012 Men’s Singles Champion Alex Abbott and Paul Sayer were both undefeated for Maldon A whilst Peter Mynard again made his mark for the losers. He beat Peter Ballard 3-1 (9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-9).

ECC C produced a strong performance in Division Two to beat Writtle B 7-3. James Hicks led the way with a 3-1 win over Hector Rogers, followed by a 3-2 success against Brian Cook and a widely fluctuating 3-2 (11-13, 11-7, 11-2, 3-11, 11-9) win over Matthew Brown.

Danbury C (Dave Richardson, Steve Whiteley and Ivan Chaplin) beat Chelmsford B 6-4. Richardson‘s 3-2 (11-9, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9) victory over James Austin in the opening game of the evening set the tone for what was a very evenly contested match with five games decided in the fifth end. Ryan Pitt won two of these nail-biters for Chelmsford. He beat Steve Whiteley 3-2 (11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10) and Ivan Chaplin 3-2 (8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7, 15-13).

Little is going right for Hatfield Peverel B and they were beaten 10-0 by both ECC C (James Hicks, Bryn Thomas and Colin Blore) and Hatfield Peverel A (Ray Eldridge. John Gagg and John Parodi).

Division Three leaders Elmtree Excalibur D tasted defeat for the first time. They lost 6-4 to Danbury E despite taking a 3-1 lead. Herbie Smith won his three singles for Danbury and this included a last gasp 3-2 (11-6, 7-11, 9-11, 13-11, 12-10) win over Scott Dowsett.

ECC D (Neil Thompson, Richard Storey and Trevor Collin) beat a two-man Hatfield Peverel C 6-4. Guy McKenzie impressed for Hatfield Peverel by beating Neil Thompson 3-2 (9-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-4, 11-9) and Trevor Collin 3-2 (8-11,12-10, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7).

ECC F (Mohammed Mohseni, Peter Sun and Allison Millard) were the week’s big winners in Division Four. They beat Writtle C 8-2. Allison Millard defeated Brian Steward 3-2 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10) in the closest game of the evening. The match between EPHQ and Danbury G finished all square. It was a good night for EPHQ’s top player Ian Hockley and he completed his hat-trick by beating Dave Marsh 3-2 (21-19, 11-6, 7-11, 7-11, 12-10) to secure the draw for his team.

Hatfield Peverel D (the Carter Family – Dave, Ryan and Adam plus Keith Cullen) have moved into top spot with five wins out of six games as they beat both ECC F and OCs C 7-3.

In Division Five OCs E (Dave Newman, Daniel Berry and Charlie Mariner) were 8-2 winners over OCs G. Stuart Wintle won the two games for the losers and he very nearly made it a hat-trick. He just succumbed to Daniel Berry 3-2 (6-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-4, 11-9).

Danbury K (Trevor Palmer, Kevin Willis and Philip Crudgington) ran out 9-1 winners over Chelmsford F. Mike Pitt saved the ‘whitewash’ with a very hard-fought 3-2 (11-8, 4-11, 13-11, 11-13, 18-16) victory over Trevor Palmer in the last game of the evening.

The match between Highwood and OCs F finished all square. Russell Downton won twice for Highwood. He beat Josh Watts 3-2 (11-6, 5-11, 13-15, 11-8, 14-12) and Peter Windley 3-2 (11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 3-11, 12-10). Tom Barker was unbeaten for the Old Chelmsfordians team.

ECC G (Emily Wood, Nathan Blore and Ben Clifford) ran out 5-0 winners over OCs A (Harry Jensen and Pratek Puvala) in the CLICK League – a result that sees them take over at the top of the table, two points ahead of ECC H.
