Cattermole hat-trick is a big boost for Elmtree Excalibur B

Hard-hitting Gary Cattermole looks to be one of the players to watch in division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League this season.

His hat-trick of wins enabled Elmtree Excalibur B to beat ECC C 7-3 and this included a 3-0 victory over James Hicks, who remained undefeated in division three the whole of last Season. Cattermole received excellent support from Peter Maynard and Phil Smith who both won twice.

Hatfield Peverel B did well to beat Writtle B 7-3. Clive Allenby led the way with a fine hat-trick of wins over Hector Rogers, Trevor Carter and Brian Cook. Elmtree Excalibur C picked up their first win of the Season with both Richard Hiskey and Nigel Lamb taking the full complement of singles as they beat Chelmsford C 7-3. Richard Hiskey completed a good evening’s work by beating Robert Shrimpton 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8 in the last game of the night.

Elsewhere, Hatfield Peverel A came out on top 7-3 against their C side. New signing Dave Calleja and John Parodi were both undefeated although Calleja had to pull out all the stops against Gareth Davies who came perilously close to victory. Calleja scraped home 12-10, 6-11,11-7, 9-11, 17-15. Davies didn’t go home empty-handed. He scored a fine 3-0 win over Ray Eldridge.

In the first division, Maldon B came out on top 7-3 against last year’s

Champions Maldon A, who are missing the services of M&G Investments Chelmsford Men’s Singles Champion Neil Charles.

Alex Abbott led the way with three singles wins whilst Paul Sayer only missed out against Minda Sinkus. Elmtree Excalibur A gave ECC A more of the “Gary treatment”. It wasn‘t Gary Cattermole who did the damage this time but the tried and tested formula of Gary Young and Gary Baker. They both won their three singles although they were both stretched by Lucy Wang.

Gary Young beat Lucy 10-12, 11-5, 11-8, 5-11, 12-10 whilst Gary Baker prevailed 11-6, 11-7, 11-13, 4-11, 11-7 as Elmtree shaded the match 6-4.

Writtle A recorded their first win of the Season with a 7-3 victory over Chelmsford A. Paul Cuming hit the heights with three good wins over the Chelmsford players – Peter Barrett, Waseem Qureshi and Darren

Richardson.

Division three makes good reading if you play for the Danbury club. Five of the top six places are taken by the village team.

Danbury E moved into third place by beating Chelmsford D 7-3. Graham Briggs won his three singles and he received good support from Lee McHugh who won twice. Gordon Fairchild was the best of the Chelmsford players and his two wins included an excellent 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10 victory over Lee McHugh.

Danbury F didn’t fare so well. Rawreth’s Paul Churn and Matt Rolfe were both undefeated as Rawreth ran out convincing 8-2 winners. Churn completed the Rawreth victory with a 11-8, 10-12,11-8, 8-11, 14-12 success against Dave Marsh in the last game of the evening.

ECC F did well to hold the higher placed ECC E to a draw in division four. Allison Barker not only won her three singles but she did it the hard way beating all three opponents – Colin Barham, Allan Thompson and Jeff Lewington in the fifth end. She completed a hard evening’s work by getting the better of Jeff Lewington 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-4, 14-12.

OCs E (Matt Newton, Tom Adam and Farooq Ahmed) ran out comfortable 10-0 winners against OCs G in division five whilst Highwood beat Chelmsford H 7-3. Martin Goddard and Kevin Barber were both undefeated whilst Michael Whelpdale, Jacqui Smith and Adam Brown all won once for Chelmsford H. Whelpdale beat Russell

Downton 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 5-11, 11-8 in the closest game of the night.

Black Notley had George Wallace to thank as they beat ECC G 3-2 in the CLICK League. Wallace beat both Nathan Blore and Ben Clifford whilst William Brazier picked up a victory with a 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 win over Blore.
