Minda “sinks” leaders Bocking

Bocking A who are currently placed second in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League had a week they will want to forget. They fought really hard against Maldon A but they lost three games by the closest margin in the fifth end and Maldon ran out 7-3 winners. It was Minda Sinkus who caused them the most problems. He beat Paul Davison 3-2 (11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9) on his way to bagging a hat-trick.

It wasn’t a good night for Davison who also lost to Keiran Lally 3-2 (3-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-8, 10-12). Kevin Gowlett who won twice for Bocking made his mark with an impressive 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-9) victory over Keiran Lally. Maldon B stay top and an undefeated Alex Abbott led them to an 8-2 victory over Elmtree Graphics A. Gary Young was Elmtree‘s best player with wins over Paul Sayer and Hamish Innes. Danbury A moved into fifth place courtesy of a Michael Andrews hat-trick against Writtle A. Tony Forster provided excellent support by beating Bruce Kettle and Gary Ward as Danbury ran out 7-3 winners.

ECC B have climbed to second place in Division Two and this week they beat Chelmsford B 7-3. The hard-hitting Simon Webber led the way by winning his three singles. Alistair Hill had to survive a fierce fight-back from Neil Gooday before he eventually won 3-2 (11-2, 11-3, 10-12, 7-11, 12-10).

Hatfield Peverel B are in third place and Steve Buer and Andrew Halling were both undefeated as they beat ECC C 7-3. Steve Buer had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Bryn Thomas 3-2 (11-1, 5-11, 6-11, 11-6, 16-14). A well-contested match between Liberal and Elmtree Excalibur C finished tied at 5-5. Richard Hiskey won his three singles for Elmtree whilst Steve Pennell and Barry Pritchard both won twice for Liberal. Hiskey just overcame Pennell 3-2 (11-8, 9-11,11-8, 5-11, 14-12).

Danbury B made it 15 wins out of 16 in Division Three with two more successes. They beat Danbury E 6-4 although it was Danbury E’s Graham Briggs who remained undefeated. Neil Want and Tim Pulham both won twice for Danbury B. Danbury B turned in a far more convincing performance against bottom side OCs D and they ran out 10-0 winners. Neil Want, Tim Pulham and Glen Laing carried all before them. Danbury E in turn beat Danbury F 6-4. Graham Briggs was again unbeaten although he had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Dave Marsh 3-2 (9-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10).

Danbury C had an unbeaten Dave Richardson to thank as they beat ECC D 7-3 whilst OCs edged out Danbury D 6-4. No single player stayed unbeaten and Peter Hance and Norman Smith both won twice for Danbury D whilst John Watts and Jack Crook bagged doubles for the Old Chelmsfordians side.

EPHQ, bottom of the table in Division Four gave themselves a glimmer of hope of avoiding relegation by beating Danbury H 6-4. Francis Whitbread bagged three wins whilst Ian Hockley won twice. Hockley beat Adam Carter 3-2 (3-11, 11-7, 15-13, 10-12, 12-10) in a very hard-fought battle. Danbury H relied on teamwork to get the better of Hatfield Peverel D. Roger Tiffin, Norman Hayes and Mick Robinson all won twice to counter Gareth Davies’ hat-trick of wins.

Writtle C picked up their fifth win of the season to add to their four draws when they beat Danbury G 6-4. Frank Neill won his three singles and he completed his hat-trick with an 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 11-13, 11-6, 11-8) victory against Dave Goody.

Leaders Danbury K scored a convincing 9-1 victory over a two-player Chelmsford G in division five. Kevin Willis and Philip Crudgington were both undefeated. Chelmsford F followed suit in second place, three points behind the leaders as they won twice. They beat OCs G 8-2 and Chelmsford G 7-3. Richard Upson was unbeaten against OCs G whilst Richard Baxter, Richard Upson and Michael Whelpdale all won twice against Chelmsford G.

Chelmsford H came out on top against OCs H 6-4. Daniel Thomas won his three singles and Jacqui Smith picked up two wins. Daniel Thomas completed his hat-trick by getting the better of Daniel Berry by the rather strange-looking scoreline of 3-2 (7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 11-0).

OCs J, the second placed side in the CLICK League scored their tenth win of the season by beating Chelmsford L 4-1. Harvey Russell and Stephen Turner both stayed undefeated in their singles. Writtle D stay top with 65 points from 16 games and they beat Chelmsford M 5-0. Peter Windley, David Meah and Alex Warway all played their part in this success.
