Rawreth’s Liam Squirrell is one of the fastest improving players in Essex. He made his mark at the M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships with a thrilling Men’s Doubles victory with Reece Seddon and he was on top form again in division 1(A) of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

Squirrell scored three excellent 3-0 wins against the Chelmsford A side who shaded the match 6-4, beating Edward Ogbebor (11-5, 13-11, 11-5), Tulay Dundar (11-5, 11-8, 11-2) and Casey Cross (11-3, 11-5, 11-8).

An impressive all-round team effort saw Writtle A defeat OCs A 7-3 although Paul Lucas was unbeaten for OCs. Matthew Brown, Richard Storey and Lee McHugh all won twice and Storey and McHugh came through a marathon doubles encounter 3-2 (7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 20-18) against Lucas and Daniel Berry.

Second-placed Liberal fell back in division 1(B) by losing 7-3 to Danbury B. Gus Heath (so impressive against Chelmsford B last week) was again unbeaten and Chris Buer recorded three excellent wins as well. Buer beat Andrew Huckson 3-1 (11-7, 8-11, 17-15, 11-9), Robin Armstrong 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 15-13) and James Mullane 3-1 (12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7).

Chelmsford B ran out 9-1 winners against a two-man Writtle B side. Mark Allaway, Simon Jarvis and Rob Shrimpton were undefeated in the six singles. Mark Allaway pipped Paul Sturton 3-2 (11-2, 11- 4, 7-11, 8-11, 14-12) in the closest game of the evening.

In division two Maldon C defeated Danbury E 6-4. John Holland was unbeaten for Maldon downing the challenges of Tim Pulham 3-0 (14-12, 14-12, 11-6), David Gatheral 3-2 (11-2, 6-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7) and Ken Sheard 3-2 (11-4, 7-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-5).

In division four team-work saw Danbury K beat Galleywood B 6-4. Roger Tiffin, Mick Robinson and Norman Hayes all won twice although they all lost against Colin Blore. Blore completed his hat-trick with a 3-1 (11-7, 11-13, 11-8, 11-6) win over Roger Tiffin.

Chelmsford Cougars defeated Chelmsford Jaguars 3-2 in CLICK division 2A. Harry Chivers and Sudheep Kamma both won once for the Cougars but they missed out against Josh Bickles. In the best game of the night Bickles defeated Harry Chivers 3-2 (11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6).

Danbury Demons did well to beat Buttsbury Badgers 4-1 in CLICK division 2B. Elliot Gardiner led the way, beating Aidan Tucker 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9) and Oscar Hutt 3-0 (12-10, 12-10, 11-4).

Buttsbury Badgers ran out 3-2 winners against OCs Lions. George Standish and Max Samuels both beat Tom Bird but they both lost to Josh Peasgood. It was a dominant display from Peasgood who beat Samuels (11-8, 11-7, 11-8) and Standish (11-4, 11-8, 11-5).

Buttsbury Bees won twice in CLICK division 2C. Ollie Barrett and George Hagland carried all before them against Chelmsford Eagles. They were pushed harder against Chelmsford Falcons and won 3-2. Alan Jiang won twice for the Falcons beating Hagland 3-0 (12-10, 13-11, 11-8) and Barrett 3-1 (13-11, 11-6, 4-11, 11-2).

Three more matches resulted in 3-2 scorelines in this division. Buttsbury Bats beat Chelmsford Eagles although James Kilen won twice for the Eagles. Killen beat Seamus Mellon (11-9, 11-8, 11-3) and Leo Beodon (11-5, 11-8, 11-5).

Chelmsford Wildcats (Emilie Guilloux and Georgina Riches) defeated Buttsbury Bats. Guilloux dominated proceedings beating Leo Beodon 3-1 (13-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7) and Seamus Mellon 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-6).

Chelmsford Panthers edged out Chelmsford Wildcats. Alesha Austin was undefeated for the Panthers with 3-0 wins over George Spicer (11-9, 11-6, 11-7) and Theo Griffiths (13-11, 11-9, 11-7).

Chelmsford A ran out 5-1 winners over Chelmsford C in the Open Knock Out Cup. Wal Bada, Wu Dong Liu and Rob Shrimpton won all their singles. Shrimpton showed up well with 3-0 wins over Cris Bernardo (11-7, 15-13, 11-8) and Wiktor Delimat (11-6, 12-10, 11-5).

Shrimpton was also successful in the Handicap Knock Out Cup. Chelmsford B (Shrimpton, Mark Allaway and Wiktor Delimat) beat OCs B 5-1 and they will play Chelmsford G in the semi-final. Shrimpton was involved in two really close matches. He missed out 18-21, 22-20, 20-22 against David Porter but he clinched his side’s victory with a 21-17, 23-25, 22-20 win over Mick Richardson.

Danbury H also won 5-1. Allan Steel, Eamon Hall and Sam Mortimer-Ford all played a part in their semi-final victory over Writtle C. Allan Steel clinched their success by beating Gary Ward 21-19, 21-23, 23-21.

Danbury (Daniel Young, Luca Bailey and Ewan Hynd) beat OCs 5-0 in the Junior Knock-Out Cup. Luca Bailey was fully extended by Tanishq Kotwal before he won 3-2 (4-11, 6-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9). They will play Chelmsford Cougars in the semi-final with the prize a final against Chelmsford A.

Chelmsford Cougars (Harry Chivers, Josh Bickles and Sudheep Kamma) beat Chelmsford Pumas 8-1. Joachin Mapes impressed for the losers with 3-2 (6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-7) win over Bickles.

OCs E (Richard Baxter, Richard Upson and David Newman) defeated Highwood A in the division three Knock-Out Cup. Melanie Bonnett beat Richard Upson 3-1 (12-10, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9) for the sole Highwood win. OCs E will play OCs A in the semi-final whilst Writtle D will face Danbury G in the other semi.

Danbury J, the runaway leaders in division four made it through to the division four knock out Cup final. They beat Chelmsford E 5-2. Dave Goody had to work hard to beat Harry Buckle 3-2 (12-10, 11-9, 3-11, 10-12, 11-7) whilst Dave Powell and Goody were fully extended in the doubles before they pulled through 3-2 (9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8) against Buckle and Martin Hiskey.
