Ramsden Reds take over from Ramsden Renegades

Ramsden Renegades, the early leaders in the first division of the Central Essex Summer League were well beaten by Writtle A. Matthew Brown won twice for Writtle, beating Chris Buer by a last gasp 3-2 (12-14, 11-7, 7-11, 11-1, 12-10) margin and defeating Steve Buer 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-5) as Writtle ran out 4-1 winners.

Ramsden Renegades’s challenge for the title faltered again and it looks like they will finish third. They were beaten 5-0 by Elmtree Excalibur A. Gary Cattermole and Peter Mynard were both undefeated on this occasion.

The new leaders Ramsden Reds also won 5-0. Charles Sweeney and Andrew Halling were both undefeated as they beat Chelmsford. Ramsden Reds enjoyed a closer 3-2 victory over Rayne. Neither Andrew Halling nor Charles Sweeney were able to get the better of the 2012 Clacton Men’s Singles Champion Kevin Gowlett. Gowlett defeated Charles Sweeney over five ends 3-2 (11-8, 11-4, 10-12, 8-11, 11-3).

Hullbridge B are on target to win Division Two after they came through a marathon match against Ramsden Raiders with a 3-2 victory. Their top player Peter Saunders won twice, which included a 3-2 (12-10, 5-11, 11-3, 11-13, 11-8) victory against John Parodi.

OCs B (Maurice Lakin and David Porter) beat Elmtree Excalibur B 3-2. Former Chelmsford first division player Maurice Lakin won twice, beating both Tony Hallett and Rod Maclennan. His game against Hallett went the full five ends with Lakin getting home 3-2 (7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-7).

South Woodham also ran out 3-2 winners. They beat Elmtree Excalibur B and this time it was Graham Briggs who won twice. He beat Tony Hallett 3-0 (14-12, 11-8, 12-10) and Steve Cheesman in five fluctuating ends 3-2 (11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 4-11,11-7).

There was another close finish to the match between Cold Norton A and South Woodham A. The score was again 3-2. The match was tied at 2-2 and Dave Marsh/Terry Hyland secured victory for Cold Norton by beating Graham Briggs/Lee McHugh 3-2 (11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 6-11, 13-11). Meanwhile, Ramsden Raiders ran out 4-1 winners against Elmtree Excalibur B. Dave Carter won twice for the Ramsden side with Elmtree’s Caroline Cole notching up an outstanding 3-1 (5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 12-10) win over John Gagg.

Writtle B were convincing 5-0 winners against Cold Norton B in Division Three. Dave Moles and Frank Neill were both undefeated. Leaders Ramsden Rovers also won 5-0. In the closest game of the evening Gareth Davies beat Valerie Board by the odd-looking scoreline of 3-2 (1-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9). Writtle B defeated Ramsden Rovers 3-2. Dave Moles enjoyed a good night. He beat Andy Simmonds 3-0 and Gareth Davies 3-1.

OCs D with five wins in five matches lead the way in Division Four. Charles Yeung was undefeated as they beat OCs C 4-1 whilst Farooq Ahmed won once and only succumbed to Matthew Porter after a real roller-coaster of a match 3-2 (14-12, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-13).

Farooq Ahmed was also in action as OCs E beat OCs C 5-0. He joined Daniel Berry in what turned out to be a routine victory. OCs D added another four points to their total by beating Chelmsford 4-1. Ian Austin was on target for Chelmsford and he made his mark by beating Charles Yeung 3-1 (11-3, 7-11, 11-3, 11-6).
