The final Grand Prix of the season arrives this weekend (May 3-4th) at the Redbridge Sports and Leisure Centre, Barkingside with another bumper entry of well over 200 table tennis players converging for the final meet of the year.
Following a long season which has taken the circuit around the British Isles from Cardiff, Glasgow and Jersey to a number of high-profile English cities including Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol and Blackpool, the 2013-14 campaign comes to a close in the capital with all of the trophies and end of season prize monies ready to be given out from the burgeoning prize pot of just over £11,000!
As ever, the Bribar London Grand Prix has brought out a number of the big names in the domestic game with a strong English feel to the men’s singles line-up – in particular with seven of the top 15 ranked players attending at Redbridge.
Top seed and local product, Darius Knight, is the favourite for the tournament with fellow challengers Chris Doran, David McBeath and Matt Ware lining up for the challenge. Bribar Nottingham Grand Prix winner Tom Maynard will also be on duty while Mike O’Driscoll and Lewis Gray make up the powerful top 15 attack set for Sunday’s proceedings in London.
One notable absentee is Wales’ Ryan Jenkins who recently announced his retirement following his 50th Grand Prix win at the Tees Sport Blackpool Grand Prix. The Welshman is on duty with his country at the ZEN-NOH 2014 World Championships in Tokyo at present but is sure to pick up the overall Men’s Singles prize once again when the season comes to an end.
Cleveland’s Karina Le Fevre also looks in pole position to win the overall Women’s Singles prize should everything go according to plan at the Bribar London Grand Prix. The top seed for the Women’s Singles will face competition from the likes of compatriots Yolanda King and Lauren Charles (nee Spink) as well as Ireland’s Amanda Mogey and Wales’ Angharad Phillips.
Of course, all of the banded events will also come to a close this weekend with prize monies available for the top five finishers across the 2013-14 campaign. Grand Prix points will be available to view at the venue via the referee’s desk*.
