AETTU COMPETITION 2014

The 2014 competition for the Association of English Table Tennis Umpires (AETTU) took place at the Draycott and Long Eaton TTC over the weekend of 21-22nd June 2014.  This is the seventh year of the competition.  The standard of play continues to improve and each event is becoming more competitive.  This year there were twenty-nine competitors and thirty-eight players and guests sat down to the evening meal at the Hallmark Hotel in Derby.

The tournament was originally organised for the 28-29th June but unfortunately this date clashed with a major music festival in the area and caused problems obtaining hotel rooms.  The competition was re-arranged for the 21-22nd June but this meant that a number of competitors were unable to attend on the new date.

The standard of play was high with a number of new umpires joined the AETTU competition for the first time.   The most improved player of the weekend was Dot MacFarlane from Warwickshire. She beat all three players in her group in the O60s event and reached the quarter finals of the event.  She reached the semi-finals of the Plate competition and was the losing finalist in the women’s competition.

Bob Evans from Cleveland, the losing finalist in the O50s event last year, moved into a new age category and won the O60s event beating Ray Jackson, from Lancashire, in the final.

The Plate competition was won by Tom Purcell, from Lancashire, beating Lyndon Griffiths from Kent in the final.

The 2014 Open competition and Ken Armson Trophy was won by the 2013 champion, Dave Griffiths from Lancashire, who beat Roy Claxton, from Scotland, 3-0.

Players and guests at the tournament were pleased to welcome Tony Chatwin, President of the AETTU.  Tony presented trophies to the successful players.

Many thanks must also go to the friends and partners of the players who supported the competition and Margaret Welch and Lilian Payne who provided the refreshments during the competition.  Thanks also to Draycott and Long Eaton TTC and Brian Savage for arranging a very good venue for the competition.  Draycott TTC would also like to thank the players and guests who used the venue and left it in a clean and tidy condition.
