The 2017 Hunts 2 Star, sponsored by Alconbury Weald and Jarvis Sports, was a tremendous success.
Held at the new Huntingdon Table Tennis Club, we were treated to a host of spectacular table tennis on Juniors day, dominated by the Hee brothers and featuring the new talented juniors from Greenhouse. On Seniors day the ever-improving Mitchell Jones claimed his first Senior Open Titles.
Junior Competition Day
In the Cadet Boys, No 1 seed Benjamin Hee romped home with victories over Howard Onweng (Sy) in the quarters, Nahom Goltom (Sy) in the semis and Daniel Hearne-Potton (Ca) in the final. Daniel Saw off Alexander Attew (Sf) in the quarters and Nickit Sajiv (Wk) in the semis before going down to Benjamin -6, -11, -8 in the final.
The Cadet Girls was won by Raquel Sao Pedro (Bd) in a smashing final against Millie Rogove (Hd). Millie came through a nailbiting semi against Ilyssa Lacorte (Hd) (-3, 7, 9, -12, 10) whilst Raquel won her semi against Kirsty Maull (St) comfortably in three.
The Junior Boys’ event was dominated by the Hee brothers Benjamin and Joseph. Joseph came through to the final with victories of Finley Cameron-Prior (Hd) in the quarters and Cacherel Mercer (Mi) in the semis before defeating his brother in a fantastic final. Benjamin saw off Zachary Martillo (Ca) in the quarters and the No 1 seed Branislav Zivkovic (Mi) in the semis.
The Junior Girls’ event was very exciting with Mya Sultan (Mi) of Greenhouse crowned victor in the most nailbiting of finals against Lois Perryman (Kt). She came through in the fifth 8, -4, 1, -2, 11 and only the scores can give an indication of just how the servings in this final went. Mya came through to the final with a similar victory against Millie Rogove (Hd) in the semis whilst Lois beat Kirsty Maull (St) in her semis.
The U21 Men’s was won by Louis Rogove (Hd). He came through to the final by beating Alexander Attew (Sf) in the quarters then came the battle of the century in the semis against Louis Roper-Gibbs where he came back from two sets down to retrieve the medal in the fifth.
In the final he cruised past Cacherel Mercer (Mi) in three straight sets, who took out Carl Breindel (Hd) in his quarters and then Matthew Gold (Sy) in the semis.
The U21 Women was a repeat of the Junior Girls’ final between Mya Sultan (Mi) and Lois Perryman (Kt). This time the fortunes were reversed as Lois came through with a straight sets victory over Mya. Lois beat Ilyssa Lacorte (Hd) in the semis whilst Lois beat Aimey Gerald Jovnarouk in the other semis.
Seniors Competition Day
The Men’s Singles was won by Mitchell Jones (Bd) who was in fantastic form. He completed his journey to the final with victories over Matthew Gold (Sy) in the quarters and Dakshin Thopay (Bk) in the semis. In the final he met and demolished Rory Scott (W Sx) in straight sets.
Rory had a very successful day before meeting Mitchell. He came through against new up and coming talent Louis Roper-Gibbs (Ca) in the quarters and then Lewis Carby (Nk) in the semis.
The Men’s Band 2 finals was contested by the same protagonists as the Men’s Singles. This time Mitchell Jones demonstrated to all watching how to overcome opponents with long pimples. He completed the final against Rory Scott in straight sets.
The Women’s events were both round robins with Carrie Cope winning gold in both the Singles and Band 1 and Jasmine Chan taking silver in the former and Lynne Trussell runner-up in the latter.
The Veterans was won by Rory Scott who beat Ryan Stockham (Wk) in the final after coming through Ian Wright (N Yk) and Samson Bekele (Sy). Ryan Stockham beat Henry Arthur (Np) in the semis and Shaun Parsley (Sx) in the quarters.
