Every now and again a team has to throw an inexperienced player in at the deep end and sometimes it works with spectacular success.

There were at least four instances this weekend where a player surpassed what was expected from them. England no.22 Cadet Boy Luke Walsh excelled against Pavilion beating both England no.84 Dov Katz and Rafi Marom and those wins helped BATTS II win 5-3 in Division One South. Chris Wheeler is only 11, but he won seven singles out of eight in Division five North taking a starring role for Ormesby V. England no.5 Cadet Paul Smith was another Ormesby player to impress. He grabbed his chance to play in Division One North with both hands beating both Wymondham Grantham’s Paul Cichelli and David Low. England no.245 Tony Wilkinson was on great form for DHS Greenhouse Progress II, winning his four singles in Division One South, which included a fine five-set win against Jide Owolabi, ranked over 100 places above him.
