Reece Chamdal won the consolation singles, Ruby Chan was a consolation runner-up and Ethan Walsh and Louis Price reached the last 16 of their respective competitions at the Swedish Youth Open in Orebro.
Walsh was seeded 16th in the Cadet Boys’ Singles and he duly lived up to that billing. However, he ran into top seed and eventual silver medallist Maksim Grebnev of Russia and was knocked out in three straight.
Joe Cope reached the last 32 having won all three group matches and then come from behind to beat Belgium’s Nicolas Degros in the last 64.
Sam Chesterman and Amirul Hussain also had 100% records in the groups but were eliminated in the last 64.
Chamdal and Kieran Wardell were unable to finish in the top two in their groups and therefore went into the consolation event, and it was Chamdal who reigned supreme, winning through four rounds and then defeating Danish opponent Emil Friis Hansen in four sets in the final. Wardell reached the quarter-finals.
Price won two of his three group matches in the Mini Cadet Boys’ Singles to advance to the knockout stages, where he started with a 3-0 victory Xavier Wats of Belgium in the first round. But he found eventual runner-up Vladislav Bannikov of Russia too strong in the last 16 and was beaten 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-7).
In the Cadet Girls’ Singles, Charlotte Bardsley and Mollie Patterson made it out of their groups into the last 32, where their runs were ended.
Chan, Gemma Kerr – on her international debut – Hannah Ward and Darcie Proud were eliminated in the group stage. Chan was the only one to win a match in the consolation event.
Chan also went out in the groups of the Mini Cadet Girls’ Singles but battled through to the final of the consolation event, where she was defeated 3-2 by the host nation’s Nomin Baasan despite a comeback from 2-0 down to level. The scoreline was 11-9, 16-14, 7-11, 6-11, 11-9 in favour of the Swedish player.
