Aadil Anand was a double winner at the London Academy 2 Star in Edgware, which attracted a massive entry of 133 players.

This included a very healthy contingent of 24 girls too, which is a promising sign, and made for a lot of work for the organisers and some delays on the day, but the tournament did manage to end on time at around 7pm.

Anand (K) continues to impress, being just 11 years old, but entering and winning both the U15s and the U18s.

Under-11 Boys

There were 23 players in the U11s. All the seeds successfully negotiated their groups and early rounds. In the quarters, top seed, James Hamblett (He) beat Jenson Moreno (He) 3-0, Max Wilson (Sx) beat Ethan Eaketts (He) 3-1, Charlie Nabarro (Mi) beat Henry Shaw (Sk) 3-2 and Thomas Palmer (Mi) beat Tommy Lyons (Mi) 3-0.

The semis also went with seeding, with Hamblett defeating Wilson in four sets and Palmer winning in five vs Nabarro. In the final, Hamblett won in straight sets. Wilson beat Nabarro in three for the bronze medal. In the consolation event final Ryan Tailor (Mi) beat Sam Gabriel (Mi) 3-1.

Under-13 Boys

There were 42 players in this event. Again, all eight seeds got through the groups and Round 1 unscathed, but sixth seed James Henry (Mi) fell prey to club-mate Palmer in three in Round 2.

In the quarter-finals, No 1 seed, Louis Price (Av) knocked out Marco Plate (He) 3-0, Mikaeel Toosy (Sy) defeated Palmer 3-1, Harry Derecki (Mi) overcame Alessio Marrocco (Sx) 11-8 in the fifth game and Nabarro had a very good win over U11s winner, Hamblett 3-1.

In the semis, Price defeated Toosy 3-1 and Derecki beat Nabarro 3-0. In the final Price won 3-0, while the bronze medal match was a walkover to Toosy. In the consolation final, Eduard Lakatos (Ha) beat Jacob Zakaim (Mi) 3-1.

Under-15 Boys

47 players took part in this age group, which was the largest of all the events. There were no major upsets at the group stage or early rounds, although Marrocco did have a good fifth set win over the higher ranked Joe Newman (Mi).

In the quarter-finals, No 1 seed Anand beat Will Michell (Sx-Horsham Spinners TTC) 3-0, but two of the games were 11-9, unranked (at cadet level) Gabriel Paulo Concepcion (Mi) beat No 8 seed Jamie Watkin-Rees (He) 3-1, Zaiim Premji (Mi) beat Louis Rogove (He) 3-1 and Price beat Owen Brown (Sx-Horsham Spinners TTC) 3-1, which was way closer than the score the last time they played.

Concepcion’s good run was cut short in a straight sets defeat to Anand in the first semi-final, while in the other semi, Price scraped through by the skin of his teeth with an 11-9 in the fifth set victory over Premji.

The final was a comfortable 3-0 win for Anand. Premji won the bronze medal match 3-0. In the consolation, Mihnea Dascalu (Mi-London Academy TTC) beat Jacob Sobel (Mi) 3-1 in the final.

Under-18 Boys

40 players participated in the Boys U18s. There were just two minor upsets at the group stage, with Will McCarthy (K) getting the better of Michell 3-1 and Brown beating Jaycee Chan (Mi) 3-0, whom he had already beaten earlier in the U15s 3-2.

In Round 1, Newman beat McCarthy 14-12 in the fifth end. In Round 2, Brown lost 2-3 to sixth seed Lee Clark (Mi), while Tom Black (Mi-London Academy TTC) had a very good 3-2 win over fifth seed Sammy Kaye (Mi) and followed this up with another great win 3-1 over his brother Joe Kaye (Mi) the No 4 seed, in the quarter-final.

The remaining quarter-final results were Anand taking Newman out 3-0, Clark succumbing to Israel Awolaja (Mi) 3-0 and Eren Gozcu (Mi) putting out Carl Briendel (Mi) 3-0.

Anand put an end to Black’s winning streak in four ends in one semi, while Gozcu ended Awolaja also in four. The final was well contested, but Anand came through 3-1, thus having lost just two ends in total in his two age group events. Awolaja won the bronze medal match 3-1. Mohammed Raqueeb (E) won the consolation event, beating Dascalu 3-1 in the final.

Under-11 Girls

There were only two entries into the Girls U11s, so they were both placed in the U15s instead, but they played each other and received medals for the U11s, with Maliha Baig (E) beating Isabelle Lacorte (He) 3-1 (8-11, 13-11, 11-8, 13-11).

Under-13 Girls

There were 10 players in this category. Unranked (at the time) Raquel Sao Pedro (Mi-London Academy TTC) won her group, beating third seed Samadhi Udamulla (He) 3-0. She then beat Scarlett Anders 3-0 in the quarters, got a walkover from Jasmine Williams (Ha) in the semi and beat Millie Rogove (He) 3-0 in the final.

Rogove had beaten Udamulla 11-8 in the deciding end in the semi-final, while Udamulla had knocked out Baig 3-0 in the quarters. The bronze medal was awarded to Udamulla. In the consolation final Isabelle Lacorte (He) beat Connie Reynolds (He) in straight sets.

Under-15 Girls

There were 16 players in this age group, the minimum number required for the allocation of bonus ranking points. The top four seeds won their groups, but again Sao Pedro caused a stir, by winning her group, beating Williams 3-0 and fifth seed Lacorte 3-2. Williams got a good win over Lacorte 3-0.

In the quarters, top seed, Patricia Ianau (Mi-London Academy TTC) outplayed Jessica Abrahams (He) 3-0, Williams knocked out Federica Bonato (Mi) 3-1, Sao Pedro was victorious over fourth seed Natalia Ianau (Mi-London Academy TTC) 3-0 and second seed, Lois Perryman (K) overcame Udamulla 3-2, having lost the first two ends.

In the semis, Patricia Ianau beat Williams 3-1 and Sao Pedro just beat Perryman 3-2, having been 0-2 down in games. Ianau was a bit too strong for Sao Pedro in the final, winning 3-1. The unseeded Williams had a good win over Perryman in the bronze medal match. In the consolation final Ilyssa Lacorte (He) Baig 3-0.

Under-18 Girls

There were 12 players in this event. In Group 3, unseeded Natalia Ianau had two unexpected 3-0 wins over Jasmine Chan (Mi) and, most impressively, second seed Tiana Dennison (E).

In the quarter-finals, No 1 seed, Sarah Menghistab (Mi) beat Tameesha Hobbs (IOW) 3-1, fourth seed Patricia Ianau overcame the higher ranked Dennison in the deciding end, Bonato beat third seed Charlotte Marsden (He) 3-1 and Natalia Ianau continued her good run, defeating Perryman 3-0.

In the semis Patricia Ianau pushed Menghistab to the fifth set, before losing 11-5 and Natalia Ianau defeated Bonato in four ends. Menghistab won the final 3-1. Patricia won the bronze medal match 3-1. Ilyssa Lacorte won her second consolation event of the day, beating Jodie Morris (Sx) 3-0 in the final.
