With this season’s county championships well under way focus is given to three of the four divisions in veterans’ division 2.
With Division 2A not starting until November 19, it is the other three divisions who played their opening matches.
Division 2B
Worcestershire were the standout team in this division as they are the only team to win both their matches as they recorded 8-2 wins against Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire II with the three men Steve Horton, Jason Thompson and Chris Hewitt all remaining unbeaten in singles play.
One point behind Worcestershire are Northants and Leicestershire II who opened with a thrilling draw as there was never than a set between the sides and it was perhaps fitting that Chris Bewer and Eileen Shaler beat Roumen Stefanov and Helen Watts in the final mixed doubles to earn a deserved draw for Leicestershire.
Division 2C
There is very little to choose between the three leading counties as Kent III, Sussex II and Middlesex III all had two wins from their two matches and it is Kent who lead the way by virtue of a superior sets advantage of a single set over Sussex.
There is still all to play for in this division and when the top three start to play each other later in the season it is only then that the division will take a real shape.
Division 2D
There are also three sides in Division 2D at the top as Devon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire all lead the way on maximum points.
The Devon team of Mike Hughes, Paul Leverty, Kevin Nichols and Penny Perry leading the way by virtue of a superior sets advantage of three sets over Glos as Devon only dropped one set as, after a 10-0 win over Hampshire, they followed up with a 9-1 thumping of Herefordshire.
