Tin-Tin Ho and Sam Walker got off to a winning start at the European Championships in Budapest today.

Ho, England’s sole representative in the Women’s Singles following the withdrawal through injury of Kelly Sibley, defeated Kubra Tan of Turkey 4-0 in her first qualifying group match.

It was a comfortable win in the main, though her opponent battled hard to make it 1-1 before falling away as the London teenager triumphed 11-5, 15-13, 11-6, 11-7.

Ho was unable to follow up with a win against the group’s top seed, Sarah De Nutte of Luxembourg, in her second match this afternoon. She led 2-1 and 3-2 but saw her opponent battle back to win 4-3 (11-6, 7-11, 11-13, 11-5, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6).

Her third group clash is tomorrow against Deng Simeng of Azerbaijan.

Rio Olympian Walker was even more impressive in dispatching Alfredas Udra of Lithuania, also 4-0 (11-3, 11-3, 12-10, 11-7).

He followed up with another 4-0 scoreline against Pavel Platonov of Belarus (13-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5). Walker completes his group stage against Lars Ronneberg of Norway tomorrow.
