The Thornbury squad celebrate their maiden championship

Thornbury claim historic league victory

Thornbury Table Tennis Club became the champions of the Bristol & District League for the first time in club history.

Following a long season it came down to the final match, with Thornbury requiring victory to seal the championship at Civil Service Club in Filton.

Thornbury claimed the championship with a 7-3 win, Matt Squires winning all three matches, beating Kuwait international and Top-60 England player Khalid Alotaibi, with Martin Gunn and Bill Dawe winning two apiece to secure the victory.

The squad of Matt, Martin, Bill and Tony Clarkson played throughout the season, all contributing when needed. They wish to thank Julian Elsbury, Ian Maggs and Tracey Dibble for support and running club and to sponsers The Anchor Inn in Thornbury and Bristol Honda.

Anyone interested in taking up table tennis can come along for a coaching session or fun at The Castle School, Thornbury on Mondays and Wednesdays fromĀ 7-9.30pm
