Keiran Lally – top class performance against Maldon A
2013 Colchester Mens’ Singles Champion Keiran Lally turned in the top performance of the week in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and his trio of wins for Maldon B against their club-mates Maldon A included a superb 3-1 (8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8) win over Alex Abbott – the first defeat for Alex this season.
With Ben Warner beating Paul Sayer in five games Maldon B ran out 6-4 winners. They top the table with 68 points. ECC A have moved into second place by beating OCs A 7-3. OCs paid the price for being a player short against the ECC side and although Terry Dowsett beat both Steve Kerns (3-1) and Peter Lau (3-2) ECC were always ahead in this match. Mark Mulley was undefeated for the ECC team.
Liberal recorded their fourth win of the season in Division Two – a comprehensive 9-1 victory over Danbury E. Robin Armstrong, Steve Pennell and Dean Andrews won all nine singles. Waseem Qureshi was undefeated for Chelmsford A in their 7-3 success against their B side. Ryan Pitt won twice for the B team and this included a hard-fought 3-2 (10-12, 12-10, 14-12, 6-11, 11-7) victory over Mike Johnston.
OCs B made it 11 wins out of 11 in Division Three by beating Danbury H 8-2. Steve Northcott was undefeated for the OCs side whilst Dave Marsh picked up two wins for the Danbury team.
Hatfield Peverel B have moved into second place, courtesy of their 7-3 win over Maldon C. Peverel’s Neil Freeman won his three singles although he had to pull out all the stops to get the better of newcomer Ciaran Whelan 3-2 (11-13, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9).
Elsewhere, Herbie Smith recorded a hat-trick of wins as Danbury F drew 5-5 with Chelmsford C and Peter Layzell won his three singles as ECC C shared the points with OCs C. Layzell’s win over David Porter could scarcely have been closer. Scores of 3-2 (15-13, 13-11, 8-11, 10-12, 17-15) tell their own story.
In Division Four ECC F impressed by drawing with the higher-placed OCs D. Allison Millard won her three singles for the County Council the hard way. She beat Adrian North, Charlie Yeung and Stuart Wintle each time over five hard-fought ends. She completed her hat-trick with a narrow 3-2 (13-11, 13-11, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8) victory over Wintle.
Bottom side EPHQ picked up their second draw of the season against Danbury L. Trevor Palmer won twice for Danbury whilst Ian Hockley and Francis Whitbread both bagged two wins for EPHQ. Danbury J edged out Writtle B 6-4 – good going as Frank Neill won his three singles for the Writtle team.
Maldon D look to be the team to beat in Division Five. Steve Scholz (three wins), Peter Scholz (three wins) and Colin Napper (two wins) dominated the action as they beat Hatfield Peverel D 9-1. They top the table with 78 points from 11 matches.
OCs G had Tom Barker to thank as they beat Chelmsford E 6-4. Barker won his three singles with wins over Ian Austin, Sarah Austin and Adam Kerchel.
3-2 results were the order of the day in the CLICK League. Chelmsford J (Jake Whybro and Harry Isaacs) beat Chelmsford G, whilst Buttsbury B (Nathan Fry and David Mitchell) defeated Felsted RBL. Chelmsford H (Peter Davenport and Steven Davenport) ran out winners against Buttsbury C.
