Day 2
Day two of the 2014 Cadet Masters at the Burton Uxbridge TTC saw three boys; Hugo Pang, Alec Ward, Alex Ramsden and four girls; Denise Payet, Kate Cheer, Kate Nixon and Zahna Hall all start as slight favourites as they remained unbeaten from day one.
However, no one managed to finish the tournament with a perfect record in tact. With 9 wins out of 11 matches Tom Jarvis was crowned 2014 English Cadet Masters Boys champion. The Cadet Masters Girls champion was Denise Payet, finishing with a mightily impressive 10 out of 11.
Round 7
The first girls round of the day saw a big clash between the unbeaten pair of Kate Cheer and Zahna Hall. In an epic four set affair it was the latter that walked away as victor. A 3-1 win for Zahna, but it couldn’t have been much closer as Kate pushed her opponent all the way; 10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 16-14. Sophie Barlow and Isabelle Joubeily were also involved in a titanic battle. Sophie allowed Isabelle to come back from two nil down and the level the match at 2-2. However, Sophie recovered and found form again in the decider taking it 11-6.
Tom Jarvis put himself back into contention on the morning of day two. He won in straight sets against previously unbeaten Alec Ward; 11-5, 11-4, 11-6. Robert Barker managed to pick up his first win of the event as he comfortably came through against James Hobson 3-0. Liam Grant achieved the same accomplishment as Barker, beating Josh Bennett 3-2 to claim his maiden victory. A 3-1 win for Luke Savill over Hugo Pang meant that going into round eight only Alex Ramsden maintained his 100% record.
Round 8
Denise Payet continued to look on top form as we moved on to the eighth round. She powered her way past Middlesex’s Zahna Hall 3-0 in what was an explosive display of attack vs defence. Kate Nixon also continued to impress with another straight sets win, this time over Bhavika Mistry. There was good news also for number 10 Gauri Duhan who won her first match of the weekend against Sophie Barlow in what was a close three set affair. By this stage only two girls had managed to continue yesterdays 100% record into round nine, and they were Denise Payet (No.1) and Kate Nixon (No. 3).
Alex Ramsden picked up a very creditable five set win against defending champion Luke Savill. In an exhilarating match that went one way then the other it was Alex that drew first blood. Eventually he also sealed the all important fifth to win 11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-8. Hugo Pang suffered a second defeat in as many rounds as Tom Jarvis again stepped up to win with efficiency. Another five setter took place between Omar Khassal (No.3) and Alec Ward (No.5), with the lower ranked player eventually coming out on top from 2-0 behind.
Round 9
By the end of the girls round nine only one could remain unbeaten as Denise Payet and Kate Nixon faced off. Denise got the better start winning the first 12-10. Kate replied with a solid 11-8 game. Denise then appeared to find another gear as she quickly progressed through games three and four to take the match 3-1. With every round comes a few mammoth encounters. This time it was the turn of Zahna Hall and Amy Blagbrough, Zahna coming through winner with a deuce fifth game. Tiana Dennison and Sophie Barlow also went all the way, Tiana winning in similar fashion to Zahna, a deuce fifth end sealed it.
Alex Ramsden’s fantastic run of wins came to end in the boys round nine. Hugo Pang recovered to get a good win over the in form Northamptonshire boy. Alex put up a good fight taking the second end 11-6, but Hugo proved too strong on this occasion winning 3-1. Alec Ward suffered only his second defeat of the weekend at the hands of Luke Savill, going down 3-1. And Matthew Leete came through a tough four game match with Liam Grant winning 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5.
Round 10
Round ten of the girls saw the battle of the Kate’s. Cheer vs Nixon. On this occasion it was Nixon that came out on top with a 3-2 win. Cheer was quick to establish a two nil lead but Nixon dug deep and two 12-10 games brought it all square. The fifth was a close and nervy affair but Nixon held her nerve to win it 11-8. There was another exciting match going on on table three. This time it was Gauri Duhan and Isabelle Joubeily. Isabelle fought back from 2-0 down to win three on the spin and take it 10-12, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-3.
The boys round ten was full of excitement as Tom Jarvis and Alex Ramsden locked horns. Tom Jarvis saved three match points at 2-0 to Ramsden and finally took the third end 13-11. From then on it was all Jarvis who stormed to victory with comprehensive 11-7 and 11-2 games to win 3-2. Hugo Pang beat Alec Ward in a juicy affair that had its ups and downs. Pang took the first 15-13 but then cruised to an 11-2 second end. Ward responded to take the third 11-9, before Hugo confirmed victory with an 11-4 fourth game.
Round 11
Going into the girls final round, we already knew that Denise Payet would be named champion. However, Kate Cheer playing for pride managed to ruin Denise’s almost perfect weekend by winning this duel 11-6 in the fifth. On table two, the winner of the Kate Nixon vs Zahna Hall match would secure the silver medal. It was a tight match that went all the way but on this occasion it was the number four seed, Zahna that held it together to clinch second, winning by a scoreline of 11-2, 5-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6. This meant that Yorkshire lass Kate had to settle for third. Isabelle Joubeily ended a good personal tournament with a win over Grace Potter. This meant that the number 11 player finished in a very creditable 5th place.
It was a similar situation in the boys. We knew that Tom Jarvis would be champion regardless of his result. And in similar fashion to the girls, he lost his last match to the number two, Luke Savill, who put a disappointing competition behind him by finishing with a fine win. Hugo Pang had to fight hard for his 2nd place finish. Coming from 2-0 behind against Omar Khassal, Hugo held his nerve to seal an 11-8 deciding game, guaranteeing him his silver medal. Surprise package Alex Ramsden overcame Cleveland’s Alec Ward in four beating him to third place in the process. Alex went home happy after a very successful tournament finishing three places higher than he was seeded too.
