Stallwood stars in ex-Champs clash
Colin Stallwood produced a star performance in Division One of the Clacton and District League with an undefeated treble in Windsor Condors’ “clash of the ex-champions” with Brotherhood A.
Stallwood recorded excellent wins in three-straight over John Andrews, Dave Binns and Alan Burgess to ensure his side finished with a share of the spoils.
Burgess and Binns each picked up two for Brotherhood although it was 11-8 in the fifth for Binns against John Pattrick and 11-6 in the fifth against Annabelle Rodriguez.
Burgess’ couple included an 11-6 in the decider victory over Pattrick who, in his turn, took a crucial win in five against Andrews.
The result leaves the Condors with their unbeaten tag but Nomads Panthers are now the only side in the Division with a hundred per cent win record, a record they maintained following their 8-2 victory over Nomads Lions. James Denyer, making his first Clacton League appearance of the season, was unbeaten whilst John Hatley had a good evening for the Lions with unexpected successes against both Colin Webber and Gill Locke.
Walton D are the third unbeaten side in the Division, this week defeating lowly Brotherhood D 8-2. Jenny Binns, making her debut for Walton, won a couple but lost out to Shaun Beckham. There were hat-tricks for Paul Woolnough and Steve Noble, Noble’s three including a nail-biting 13-11 in the decider win over Lee Harvey.
Windsor Hawks continued their steady progress by defeating Brotherhood B 7-3, Felipe Rodriguez excelling with a maximum. Andy Vincent won two for the Hawks, including an 11-7 in the fifth victory over Martin Edwards, but he went down 12-10 in the fifth to John Owen who took two of Brotherhood’s points. In the battle of the Division’s young newcomers, Windsor’s Ian Fielder defeated David North.
Gary Cattermole and Phil Smith were undefeated for Windsor Eagles in their 9-1 win over a Walton B side who, even at this early in the season, are being dragged perilously close to the relegation zone.
Nomads Ocelots, having played two matches more than most other teams, are setting the pace in Division Two, this week inflicting a 9-1 defeat on bottom-team Brotherhood I. Doug Green’s three victories were settled in three-straight but Daryl Lott’s treble was harder-fought, needing a full five sets to beat both Rowan Cottee and Brotherhood reserve Duncan Dunne.
Windsor Ravens and Lawford are two teams looking likely to be involved in the promotion mix and both sides preserved unbeaten records when the match between them ended level. Gary Stallwood was undefeated for Windsor whilst John Colvin and Paul Hewitt took two each for Lawford. Surprisingly, only one of the matches went to a decider, John Colvin’s 3-2 (12-10, 6-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-8) win over John Harvey.
The score-line shows Windsor Harriers beating Brotherhood J 8-2 but the Brotherhood youngsters will feel aggrieved to have lost all three matches that went to a fifth set. Kelvin Olano and Tom Wilkin played well to defeat Windsor’s Isabel Barton and Ferdy Rodriguez respectively.
In Division Three Brotherhood E marched on at the top with a whitewash win over Windsor Ospreys to make it forty-seven points out of a possible fifty.
But the battle behind them is hotting up with any one of five sides – Nomads Pumas, Windsor Penguins, Brotherhood G, Brotherhood H and Brotherhood L – potential promotion challengers.
The experienced Nomads Pumas enjoyed a typically hard-fought battle against Nomads Leopards before emerging 6-4 winners. Tony Rayner took a resilient three for the losers whilst Alan Dockerill and Lionel Goddard won a couple each for the Pumas. John Houghton beat Norman Jacobs but went down in five to both Rayner and the improving Harry Beezer.
Brotherhood H were forced to field a guest player against the all-female Windsor Swallows’ side and did well to come out with a draw. Windsor’s Angela Barratt won the pivotal tie of the evening, beating Graham Parkes 3-2 (7-11, 11-9, 14-12, 9-11, 11-6).
Brotherhood L defeated a gallant Nomads Wildcats 10-0, Debra Found taking hat-tricks in successive matches for the first-time, whilst Windsor Penguins were 10-0 winners over Walton E, Jackie Bunce and Sue Chillingworth another two women players to stay unbeaten.
Finally, Nomads Lynx beat Windsor Kites 9-1, Carl Hubbard defeating Tom Collins for the Kites’ consolation point, with Chris Simson narrowly losing 11-9 in the fifth to the same player.
