Halling hat-trick leaves Hatfield Peverel A in control

Division Two leaders Danbury D made it 13 wins out of 14 in what is turning out to be a very impressive season in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

They beat Hatfield Peverel A 7-3 and their leading player – Andrew Halling won his three singles which included a convincing 3-0 (14-12, 11-2, 11-3) win over John Webber, the best of the Hatfield Peverel players.

Danbury C played twice. With Dave Richardson remaining unbeaten they defeated Writtle B 6-4. Former first division player Richardson had to dig deep to get the better of Matthew Brown 3-2 (4-11, 4-11, 11-1, 15-13, 13-11).

They also drew with second-placed ECC C. James Hicks won his three singles for the County Council side and he sealed the draw for his team with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-1, 15-13) success against another former first division player – 1974 and 1975 Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Steve Whiteley.

Elmtree Excalibur D lead the way in Division Three with 113 points out of 150. They made it 13 wins in 15 games with a thumping 10-0 victory over Chelmsford D and a 6-4 win against third-placed Elmtree Excalibur C.

Russell Mills was unbeaten in both matches whilst Scott Dowsett only missed out against Bill Smith. Danbury D are fourth and they beat ECC D 6-4. ECC ‘s Richard Storey and Neil Thompson and Danbury’s Herbie Smith and Nicky Ford all won twice.

Maldon C stay top in Division Four although they were hard pushed to get the better of third-placed OCs C 6-4. Brian Riedling was their match-winner with a hat-trick which included a hard-fought 3-1 (12-10, 14-12, 11-13, 11-8) win over David Porter who won twice for OCs.

OCs D were 7-3 winners over ECC F. Charles Yeung and Farooq Ahmed both stayed undefeated. Yeung beat Mohammed Mohseni 3-2 (12-10, 11-6, 11-13, 11-13, 11-9) in the closest game of the night.

The match between Danbury H and Hatfield Peverel D finished all square. The Danbury duo of Dave Goody and Craig Foster and Hatfield Peverel’s Dave Carter and Ray Eldridge all won twice.

First played second this week in Division Five and the week’s big match between OCs E and Danbury J ended in a 5-5 draw. Dave Newman won his three singles for OCs and Janet Pannell won twice for Danbury.

Newman beat Pannell 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-8) in their encounter. Danbury J also beat OCs G 7-3, although none of their three players – Norman Hayes, Janet Pannell or Roger Tiffin were able to get the better of Stuart Wintle. These results means that Danbury have a four point lead with four games left to play.

Stuart Wintle was also undefeated when OCs G lost 3-7 to Chelmsford F. Daniel Thomas, Mike Pitt and Eric Clift all won twice for the Chelmsford side.

Second-placed ECC G (Nathan Blore and Emily Wood) were 5-0 winners over KEGS/OCs in the CLICK League. Nathan Bore just prevailed 3-2 (11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9) against Harry Clark. Chelmsford K (George Wackett and Harry Isaacs) beat Chelmsford J 3-2. George Wackett had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Jake Whybro 3-2 (6-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9).
