Oxfordshire Schools’ Competition a Great Success

Despite having to cancel the original event owing to the snow, over eighty students from all parts of the County competed at Fitzharrys School, Abingdon for the honour of being County champion and the option of representing the County at the National Finals.

The standard of play was excellent with the U/16 boys’ event featuring a quality field.

Results:

U/11 Girls– Winner Scarlett Jones (Cranford House); Runner-up Maha Hussain (Sonning Common)

U/13 Girls – Winner Vicky Coll (St Helen’s, Abingdon); Runner-up Scarlett Jones (Cranford House)

U/16 Girls – Winner Megan Knowles (Chiltern Edge); Runner-up Kristelle Brook (King’s School, Witney)

Scarlett Jones, in her first competition, showed that she is a fine prospect in winning the U/11 singles. Vicky Coll continues to develop into a fine player and was a worthy winner of her event. Megan Knowles showed why she is so highly ranked in beating Kristelle Brook in the U/16 final.

U/11 Boys – Winner Reece Chamdal (Langford, Bicester); Runner-up Tom Jordan (Sonning Common)

U/13 Boys – Winner Joe McKenna-Jones (Gosford, Kidlington); Runner-up Josh Selby (John Mason, Abingdon)

U/16 Boys – Winner Niall Harris (Wallingford); Runner-up Sam Weaving (Sibford School)

Reece Chamdal continues to develop into a fine player and dominated his event. Tom Jordan played well to reach the final.

Joe McKenna-Jones needed to be at his best to win this event and in the final he defeated the top seed Josh Selby in three straight sets.

The Boy’s U/16 event was very competitive with any one of eight players being the potential winner.

In the semi-finals Niall Harris defeated his club mate Simon Price (Matthew Arnold) and Sam Weaving, who had been involved in a series of tough matches, defeated Danny Dockree (Chiltern Edge). In the final Niall Harris’s barrage of top-spins proved too much for Sam and he was victorious in three sets.
