ROOSTERS AND JAGUARS WIN THROUGH

Windsor Roosters and Nomads Jaguars will battle it out in this year’s final of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League’s Handicap Knock-Out Cup.

The Roosters, twice winners of the Cup in the last four years, were 5-1 semi-final victors against 2007 holders Brotherhood A.

The Windsor side raced into a surprise 4-0 lead that included an

11-8 in the fifth success for Mark Smith (0) over Greg Green (0) and a 14-12 in the decider win for Gary Cattermole (-1) against Alan Burgess (+1).

Burgess and Antony Greenwood (0) avoided the whitewash by defeating Smith and James Denyer (0) in the middle doubles but Denyer, who had earlier enjoyed an excellent win over Greenwood, beat Green in four to confirm the Roosters’ victory.

The Nomads Jaguars’ trio of Terry Kirby, Colin Beaumont and Tony Beezer made the short trip across the Holland marshes for their semi-final against Walton D and returned home narrow 5-4 winners, the Jaguars crucially taking all three doubles.

In a typically see-saw cup-tie, the Nomads’ side led 1-0, trailed 1-2 and led 4-2 before Kirby and Beaumont (+1) sealed the victory with an unexpectedly comfortable 11-9, 11-1, 11-1 doubles win over Dearman and George Kalli (-3).

The Cup Final will be played on Tuesday 1st May at 7.30 pm at the Brotherhood Hall.

* In Division Two of the League, the relegation clash between Brotherhood F and Brotherhood E ended in a 6-4 victory for the ‘F’ team, John Stubbings winning three and Sandie Isaac two for the victors, Mark Beckham taking a couple for the losers.

In Division Three the Brotherhood ‘H’ and ‘K’ teams locked horns in a titanic struggle, the match eventually ending all-square, Adam Wilkin’s three for Brotherhood H including a tight 11-5, 11-8, 14-16, 7-11, 11-9 victory over Dan Malinowski.

The ‘H’ team’s Michael Gallone lost 13-11 in the fifth to Malinowski and 11-9 in the fifth to Rob Bright, whilst team-mate Tom Wilkin went down 11-8 in the decider to Brian Baines.

* In Division Three of the Veterans Section of the Essex Inter-League, Clacton A enjoyed a 7-2 win over Basildon B, Colin Webber winning his two singles, Phil Smith and Martin Edwards one apiece, whilst the team took all three doubles.

The victory means that the Clacton side finishes the season unbeaten at the top of the table.

Clacton A and Clacton B met in Division Two of the Super-Veterans Section with the ‘A’ side taking the honours 5-4.

Colin Dearman took two singles and John Hobson one, with John Stubbings sharing two doubles wins for the ‘A’ side whilst, for the ‘B’ team, Terry May won twice, Terry Kirby once, with the two players sharing a doubles success.

Clacton A are currently top of Division Two, having finished their programme, and must await the result of the outstanding match of nearest rivals Southend B, the only team which can overtake them.
