The eight groups of women’s singles provided a number of interesting matches with surprising qualifiers who will advance to the next round; including bottom-seed Janine Bromley who won her group.
Bromley was in group eight with Vicky Smith, Sarra Wang and Emily Ross but forced her way into the next round after beating both Wang and Ross. Her win against Wang proved to be crucial as the 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-5) victory meant that she progressed on count-back with Smith following her through as runner-up.
Another of the big winners was Evangeline Collier who won her group after a couple of excellent matches including a big win over Sanja Clements, who had to settle for the runner-up spot.
Collier won an absolute thriller 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 13-11) which means in the first round she will face Abbie Milwain in the next round.
Milwain finished second in her group behind the talented cadet girl Tin-Tin Ho who not only beat Milwain but managed to secure a superb comeback win against frequent rival Maria Tsaptsinos.
She had trailed 2-0 but fought back astonishingly to win 3-2 (8-11, 5-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-8).
The other players who made it through to the first round includes group winners; Tressa Armitage, Jessica Dawson, Chloe Whyte, Natalie Slater and Karen Shepherd and runners-up; Isobel Ashley, Emma Torkington, Megan Knowles, Janay Gibson and Sue Collier.
