Twenty table tennis teams of 2 boys and 2 girls representing the Premier League football clubs involved in the Premier League 4 Sport programme, competed for medals at the Fred Perry Urban Cup at the London Business Design Centre in Islington on Saturday.
The event is the culmination of competition for thousands of young people competing in satellite and hub club events in their area, and focused on encouraging more girls to take up table tennis and train young people as officials for the event.
The competition was restricted to give an opportunity for young people who have only just started to take up table tennis, a chance to reach the national final. For many of the players it was also their first visit to London.
The overall gold medal winners were Manchester United, who just pipped Portsmouth (silver medallists) and Fulham FC (bronze medallists) by 2 points.
In the boys team event Blackburn took the gold medal position with Manchester United taking silver and Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur taking bronze. In the girl’s event Portsmouth won gold, Manchester United took silver with Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City taking bronze.
Over the next few days we will be placing photos of the teams up on flickr and the Fred Perry Urban Cup website, so keep visiting our flickr page to see the latest photos.
