England’s interest in the Spanish Open is over as Luke Savill, Sam Mabey and Matthew Daish have all gone out – in Daish’s case through injury.
Daish was first on court, in the under-21s and he gave a good account of himself against David Comeliau of Belgium, especially in the first three games. But he lost the fourth 11-4 as Comeliau closed out the match, and it turned out to be the last involvement for Daish, who withdrew from the men’s singles and doubles – he was partnering Wales’ Marc Castro – through injury.
Savill also started in the under-21s and led Poland’s Maciej Kolodziejczyk 2-1 in the round of 64 before being edged out 11-9 in the fifth – his opponent has gone on to reach today’s quarter-finals.
In the men’s singles, Savill was the lowest ranked in his group and fought hard to prevent a 3-0 defeat by Aidos Kenzhigulov of Kazakhstan, winning the third 15-13 before going down i nthe fourth. His second matc was a close 3-0 defeat to Santiago Lorenzo of Argentina.
Mabey had chances against Martin Pintos of the host nation in his first match, particularly in the second game, which he led 9-4 before losing 12-10. He went on to be beaten in four and then lost in three to the group’s top-ranked player, Youssef Abdel-Aziz of Egypt.
